E320CDI 2004 - straight 6 diesel
I have a 2004 car with 177k which exhibits what Kent of Mercedessource describes as 'Dead body in the trunk syndrome,' as well as occasionally hearing a wheel bounce a couple of times on lumpy bits of road.

Thinking rear shocks would be a good idea but the car doesn't justify spending a fortune. I can see lots of different dampers at widely varying prices. the ones on the car have an external module attached to the lower end - something to do with the self levelling?

ECP show a Bilstein which looks like it, with the module, but at £815 each is more than the car is worth.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Well, I ordered what I thought from Autodoc but now they've arrived, they don't look right. The ones on the car have a cable connection but the ones received don't.
From the VIN listed above, does my car have sports suspension?

The shocks on the car have an additional small cylinder attached by the lower mounting point. I had assumed this has an electrical connection, but on closer inspection I can't see any wiring. Are these reservoir shocks?
I've seen articles saying they are superior, but is that overkill for a 16 year old car?

That does look like a piggyback reservoir. They have the benefit of more consistent damping performance.

The other Bilstein unit listed on Autodoc is

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/bilstein/638159

This looks like the part that I have, including the bellows around the spindle and the reservoir. The only reason that I didn't order that is that it states it's for cars with sport suspension. There was no picture for the unit that I did order, otherwise I would have realised the problem
