Hi all. I'm looking at a 2007 cl500 (W216). It's got a full MB service history, MOT history seems fine, and it's done 80 000. Is that a lot of miles or are these reliable over big miles (properly maintained), without breaking or breaking the bank?

Hello and welcome

They can be very good, and cars are always better being used than just sat around.
The CL like the S-Class were the top of the range and can have some very expensive tastes commensurate with the original purchase price and not what you can buy them for now...

If it’s been well maintained and the ABC suspension has also been regularly serviced then it should be a great place to spend your driving time.

Thank you. I’ve steeled myself for proper maintenance and the associated cost. Lovely looking cars, and I can’t wait to have a v8 rumbling along as well.

Only trouble with Merc V8s (except the AMGs) is that they are very quiet, especially inside the car. Generally that is fine but occasionally it would be nice to hit a switch and get the roar.
My wifes old Audi TT seemed to have it sorted with a fruity little note when accelerating which disappeared once cruising.

Immy at Torqueflow (MSL) in Birmingham can sort that out. Mine sounds sublime.

I never found my 216 particularly expensive to maintain, sure it needs 16 spark plugs but that's only every 30k or so , brakes / tyres arent dear either really , my only warning to any buyer is the amplifier can fail without warning , 1200 quid to replace, they can suffer with battery drain issues , my advice would be to have the car on a diagnostic tool before purchase

Thank you all for your messages and information. I have taken the plunge and pick the car up on Saturday. Service History is spot on and it looks like it's barely been used (despite the 77000 on odo.) For those of you who are interested, this is it. The tan interior and particularly the mat look wood sold me (as well as the fact that sitting in it made me want to move in permanently). Obviously, I am EXTREMELY excited. Really nice people at the car dealers, as well, with a lot of very positive reviews.
On my W220 S-class, I had a tailored plastic boot liner. Does anyone know of such a thing for the W216?

Great looking buy! First thing to do when you get it is to check and clear the drains in the bulkhead area. There are 3 in wiper scuttle, 1 in each of the plastic vent grilles and 1 next to each of the bonnet hinges. The worst culprit is the one by the passenger side hinge which has a 45 degree bend in it and blocks easily, causing water ingress into the floorpan.

Has no one mentioned the “possibility “ of ABC pump and other ABC component failure yet

I’ll start the ABC discussion by saying keep £1k for the pump in an account and £1k a corner for the suspension
