OP here.
Really surprised at the magnitude of the response. As a demonstration of my lack of knowledge I was not aware that there is a waxing process to be done after polishing, I thought you put wax on and polished it to a shine, learnt something there. The information provided needs to be considered before I make my mind up. Thank you all for your help.

Autoglym is good in a way. But it deposit whitish powder inside all the gaps , like inside doors jabs boot lids and any crack it can find .
It is very chalky Optimus :)

To do a "proper" job:
- Fallout remover
- Clay
- Wash and dry
- Compound (if required)
- Polish
- Wax or Sealant or Quick Detailer

But only if you're OCD like me :)

Fareclas for defect corrections, AG Super Resin for polish then good old fashioned Simoniz wax as a finisher.

My cars are all silver so not bothered by white bits.

I know I am perceived to have an axe to grind but after 20 years in the car care business, I am amazed people still use, let alone recommend, Super Resin Polish.
Its chalky, dusty, leaves white marks on black trim that are almost impossible to remove, and residue around metal trim, decals etc. If unprotected, it dulls again in 3 weeks. Life has moved on....

Any clay bar or mitt will do, rather than overpriced ones with a proprietary Quick Detailer as the overspecced lubricant.

Megs products are OK, very mid-market but freely available but a small increased investment in better, niche products will pay dividends in shine and durability. Adding a QD at the start of the process in my mind highlights a shortfall in the product being used under it.

True ceramics are only good for pristine paint, and if £20 seems a lot for any product, I'd venture the car doesnt have it. Ditto, if you have no clue what brand to buy, you'll ideally be looking for a product with fillers to hide swirls, and a ceramic will accentuate rather than hide those imperfections. A Ceramic detailer has questionanable bonding to various coatings, which, after all, are designed to repel liquids. So they do have a role but are not for everyone.

Best advice I can give is, try a few products yourself, from different brands, maybe use or obtain samples, and see how they suit YOUR car, paint, care routine and time you have available to spend on cleaning YOUR car.

OK so what would you recommend polish wise for dark cars that will fill small swirls before wax is applied

Not only that but the weather protection after Autoglym S/ R is next to nill . Fine for garage owners .But for cars kept outside its not .
It's not meant to , it's a filler type polish .

From a fellow Stokie ;)

Bilt Hamber range

Autowash is a particularly good & concentrated shampoo

Double Speed Wax is excellent & cost effective.

Much more in the range - snowfoam, fall our removers, wheel cleaners etc etc

I use 2 or 3 young fit east Europeans, sit back and watch, until the car glows.

Elbow grease fills the grit swirls and gives the shine!

That is why a wax is usually applied after polishing.
At least, that is my method.

It it helps...?

I use Zymol Creame Wax (37% Carnauba) on my silver W220 from the 'Clean your Car' detailing co. https://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/zymol-creame-wax.

Mine's a mid-range product ('only' £54 for a small beaker-sized tub!). But it is VERY thick & sticky, beads well, buffs up to a brilliant lustre and lasts about 3 months between applications given that my car is exposed to the elements 24/7. I used to use Autoglym products - perfectly good for general use - but Zymol is far better quality. 'You only get what you pay for?'

That said: the paintwork on my 18 year-old 'S' is already immaculate for its age since the car was garaged overnight by the previous owner, has never been through a mechanical (rotating brush) car wash, has no surface abrasions or swirls and as far as I can judge, doesn't need 'clay bar' preparation as is often recommended prior to applying the now more popular Ceramic coatings. As for main dealer recommended 'Supagard' treatments at approx £150 per shot: no comment as I have some experience of these things ...;)

'Clean your Car etc' also do other specialist formulations for dark metallic / vintage & exhibition paintwork with prices ranging up to the £ Hundreds depending on the purity. Worth some research depending on how fastidious you are.

@johnmowcop what did I tell you................... :) Everyone thinks theirs is the best.

Sorry to disagree, but I made no inference to mine (Zymol) being 'the best'. Only my considered answer to johnmowcop's Q. about 'alternatives', and which might be helpful to him or others here in a wider context. I hope my introductory phrase 'If it helps..' makes this clear?

My statement was in jest and not directed you - I’d have quoted part of your statement if I was responding to your post. Just a co-incidence that it immediately followed yours. Nothing else.:)

However, now that I have read your post, there is the caption 'The Best or Nothing’ for you photo. :D
