Today I'm going to set about starting to get to the bottom of a couple niggles with the c207. Dpf pressure sensor is the first problem but before I buy a new sensor its a wire check. Any advice greatly appreciated as always :)

I've copied this idea from another forum that I use (A Ford Transit Forum) of all things!

I quite look forward to getting the e-mail notifiers that someone has posted something... De-badged their van, polished it, new wheels maybe... even a new air freshener....

Just a bit of fun really....

So, come on...

about an hour an a quarter longer than it should have been but still nice top down. A couple of spots of the wet stuff but nothing in the cab.

Drove the w203 back from Lake District to London with a detour via Loughborough to view and test-drive a 2008 CLS. Was a good price and relatively good condition, a great drive however, a few niggles (parking break not working at all, either from the foot or the release, faulty window regulator/sensor on left front passenger window, TPMS error, and a ticking from the engine that didn’t sound right to me) so, for now, a pass and onto the next one.

I did do a quick diag just for completeness, snapshots below for anyone interested. There were only a few concerning stored/current codes (oxygen sensor issues and adaptive brakes solenoid etc), most seemed to be from the 58k km mark around low voltage errors, presumably due to a battery issue and subsequent replacement, however some of the current codes also complain of low voltage so could mean electrical gremlins. Interesting to look at.

Trip to the garden centre, amongst others made up for an excuse to drive.
Parked at the far end of the car park as usual to avoid other car door dinks.

Well funny you should say that because this is what greeted me after finishing my work yesterday morning. o_O
I had to wash my car before going to bed after my night shift.
Whatever bird did this I dont think it was feeling well.

A few weeks back I got some Mobil 3000 oil at the right price and Mann oil and air filters and since been waiting for the monsoon to clear. This morning decided to change them, misled the vacuum pump but found the Lidl electric one. Half an hour later all done can't decide which pump is better I think the electric may be faster but perhaps lacks the suction to finish the very last drops, not sure.
Checked the KMs since the last change 8K in 19 months oil was fine but surprised at the dust and leaves in the air filter.

Changed the inner track rods , lower control arms and lower pressed in ball joint on the E class (over the last 3 days ) .
First day I did the track rods , to my surprise they didn’t take 7 minutes each side as YouTube suggested ;) , they took a LOT longer but first time I’ve ever changed them on a car so no complaints (Lemforder parts ) £13 each .

Next day was spent bending and breaking a cheap ball joint splitter then smashing a ball joint out with a hammer , surprisingly this part also took longer than the 5 minutes that YouTube suggested , I even snapped a ball joint prybar thingy by using a Jack under it . After hours I released one ball joint .
That evening I borrowed two good quality ball joint splitters from a friend.

Next day the other ball joint was done in 5 minutes, the difference a quality well fitting splitter makes , there’s a moral in their somewhere . I then had to use for the first time a ball joint press tool I bought from eBay for £50 specifically for the w211 . This worked a treat in pushing out the ball joint which is a common source of low speed knocks and squeaks on the W211 apparently. Using @Oldspanners tip of leaving the new ball joint in the freezer , the tool pushed the new joint in to the hub carrier , it took a breaker bar to do it though . £16 each for Lemforder . Finished off with a new control arm for good measure , the old one was fairly well split . Last thing I did the other side with control arm removal and ball joint splitting .

Finished off today , the other side was easier because I had all the right tools handy . A quick test drive and I’m hopeful that the knock/squeak is gone ? Control arms were £132 for the pair (Meyle HD)

Next job on Tuesday is get the alignment done .
It was a hard job working on a sloping drive without much space but I think it’s under £200 in parts and £50 for the pressing kit .

Well done Wighty, I can imagine the frustration at working with tools not fit for the job:mad::mad:. Having done a bit of work at a W211 all I can say is they are impressively well (over engineered?) put together if not always simple to take apart.
As always the pain and frustration of a job not going as youtube would suggest is compensated by knowing it won't have to be done again and what you saved will buy a lot of liquid refreshment and still have plenty left.
Off now to try and trace a squeak/grind at the rear suspension hoping its not broken springs!

Cheers OS , don’t you mean you hope it’s “only” a broken spring

Yup, absolute minimum I will do from now on, thankfully relatively easy on the Autel MaxiAP AP200 . Only annoying thing is the full summary report doesn’t break down the details and readings of values for each code until you read each module manually after the fact. That said, the report is super useful and, in the case of this car, defo confirmation not to get it. Am hoping the next one I see is better but it was still good to look at one in person and try it out... even from the same generation of car, the C219 / W219 CLS feels worlds apart from the W203 ! At present considering 2007-2011 models (based on price of 4-9k). Just hoping I can get a bit on part X of the C270cdi .

Solid job! The reasons you have mentioned with the trouble splitting the ball joint are exactly why I have failed and subsequently avoided the job in the past (like replacing perished CV boot, opting instead for the universal split-boot kit that you cut to length and glue together). I still have a ball-joint splitter, looks like a large, pointy, curved, tuning-fork :) Not sure if I will ever get the guts to try again.

Well. Hello again all. What a mental first few months of the year, I’ve had zero time to call my own at all.

On Saturday I bit the bullet and invested in this...
