Is Birmingham uphill?

From Brum to Nottingham I regularly get 50+mpg. Coming back I can't get more than 46. Doesn't seem to matter which way the wind is blowing or what the traffic is like so I'm left thinking it must be uphill. . .

I haven't the faintest idea! When it gets low, I put fuel in, but couldn't tell you what it is doing MPG wise.

resetting when you hit the motorway is CHEATING!!!!!!

this is mine, home to Sheffield and back, legal all the way (including through the roadworks) from a totally cold start (first start of the day!) and NO resetting when i got to the motorway etc.

First impressions

First short run, Hove to Brighton and back at night, average speed of around 27 MPH: 28.5 MPG on the trip meter.

First shorter and much slower run, yesterday morning: as far as I recall the average speed was 15 MPH and the meter showed just a little under the 17.4 MPG that's suggested in an AutoTrader page for the class of vehicle.

Today's short runs will be more normal. A mixture of 30 MPH and 20 MPH zones. I'll share results from these, then probably not post again to this topic unless something unusual is observed.

I read in various topics that the vehicle's own metering may be optimistic, so I'm testing a few apps.

Side note: I'm nearly always gentle with accelerator, brakes and cruise control. Yesterday I learnt that my gear change override habits were probably not optimal in the past – apparently with petrol, if I'm to override I should aim to not do so before RPM reaches around 2,500 (discussed elsewhere). So for future consistency, I'll probably allow gear changes to be automated as often as possible.
