There was a report a while back on the BBC that if you thrash the engine to 2000rpm but back off at higher revs, you get best economy as you move the engine rapidly out of its 'inefficient zone' and into its most economical. I tried looking for the report, but cannot find it. An alternative report on mpg, which is quite reasonable is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A5043575
As posted, C220cdi, up and down yorkshire dales or stop starting in town, circa 40mpg, long distance up to 66, but recent check driving upto legal limit of 70, got 57.3 (photo).
ML270cdi returns approx ~30mpg, lowest Ive had is 22mpg at 125-130mph on dial with Ultimate diesel. Highest has been a tad short of 40, over a 1000 miles with turbo disabled!!
A140 is returning high 40's in day to day running, but at Autobahn speeds, ~40. Lowest Ive had so far is 36mpg but using 95 Octane fuel. 91 Octane seems to return the best mpg for this engine.
