wow, I had the identical brother to your 1990 Golf GTI16V - Oak Green Metallic too! (known to me as 'Ghosts' due to reg no G880 STS), amazing car!

I had one in Tornado Red, H plate, really regret selling it

Seems that most have have had Golfs and many have had the 16V GTI must be some kind of mandatory apprenticeship.

Lol, I forgot to add the 1 day ownership I had, bought one to replace my written off lotus, to find that my insurance wouldn't cover it as it had more than 2 seats

Shame, wasn't in a place to faff on, and had just renewed my insurance before the car was written off... Let the seller keep the deposit.l. Lovely car, would have been worth more by now.

Like a midnight blue and 16v to boot... What a plank.

My history starts in 1967 with a 1948 Austin 8 followed by 1957 Hillman Minx ( no heater was an extra lol ) then a Mk2 Zephyr 6 all black and chrome, 1965 Humber Sceptre this was a nice comfy car that went well, Bull nose Triumph 2.5 pi with no limiter on early models, then followed by two mk 1 Granadas then a mk2 ghia Granada. 3 Marinas and a Maestro (wifeys cars honest). Then came the taxis...first was aLondon fx4 taxi then Montego hls then 2 Citreon BX estates and a Citreon c25 12 seater bus then Merc C201, E210 x 2 then and current 2 x 638 Vitos but only one left now that has 350000 miles on it and finally an R129 300Sl that I'll never part with.

whoops, I also forgot about a less than 1 day ownership I had of a Golf GTI16V - bought from Benfield motors, Newcastle, stolen from the driveway of a friends house that very evening! G752 VJR in 1990 which was eventually replaced with G880 STS - 12 miles on the clock when I parked it up, never to be seen again!!

Believe it or not I had a similar experience with my Mk1 Golf GTI. Brand spanking new tax free car taken to Norway on ferry. It got lifted from the office car park in Oslo about a week after I started there. I was so ****ed off that I cancelled my Norwegian classes in spite of the whole nation. it was recovered at the foot of a cliff less wheels, seats and engine - a complete write off. Happy ending was that a few months later the police pulled over a regular Golf that was going suspiciously fast. They found my engine, wheels and seats installed in the car along with a pile of drugs which the Norwegian authorities took pretty seriously in those days. The guy should be getting out soon!

Lancia Beta Coupe -mmmm. Used to comute from Weybridge to Wimbledon with a guy who had one of these and he got me into Lancia so bought the Fulvia. His dad had all kinds of exotic Lancias - Flavia and others I cant remember. I think he was secretary of the Lancia owners club at the time.

almost unbelievable Neil- I was so gutted, I remember clearly my mates wife knocking my door in the morning, asking' John- did you park your car here last night? cause it isn't her now!!' I thought it was a wind up at first of course. The 1990 big bumper model was as rare as hen's teeth at the time too, hence why I bought it in Newcastle when I lived in Linlithgow at the time!

hmmm. i turned 17 in 1992 and so far ive had

1981 X reg Austin metro 1.0L CR@P but affordable to insure
1985 C reg Escort 1.3 Laser estate. great car, added a few extra toys to it
1986 D reg Ford Orion 1.6GL. Loved it, but it lacked central locking that the later ones had
1989 G reg Ford Orion 1.6LX. Loved it and it HAD central locking!
1991 H reg Fiesta 1.8 Diesel. great MPG!
1971 J reg VW Beetle. bought as a project. ended up breaking it
1966 D reg Ford Cortina Mk1 1500 Super. a toy that i sold.
1986 D reg Ford Fiesta Mk2. i needed transport at the time
1992 J reg Ford Fiesta 1.8 Diesel. more miles munched
1990 H reg Jaguar XJ6 4.0 Sport Manual. on loan and was going to buy it but the owner decided to keep it after his ban. gutted. 6 months of FUN!
1993 L reg Ford Mondeo 1.8GLX. lots of space, comfort and cheap to buy.
1996 N reg Mercedes C220 Diesel manual. mega economical mile muncher. written off by 42 tonne scania.
1990 G reg Ford Escort 1.8 Diesel. £50 shed to get me around.
1991 J reg Ford Sierra Sapphire. great fun but got a few tickets!
1993 L reg Ford Granada Auto. gearbox went bang so converted it to manual. 2.0 engine was underpowered though
1997 R reg Ford Escort 1.8TD. upspecced to near GTI spec.
1996 P reg Mercedes C250 Turbodiesel manual. possibly my favourite car to date. not as good to drive as the 203 in many ways BUT you could work out more problems without STAR. took fire and was written off.
1998 R reg Ford Transit 2.5Di. slow but bombproof mechanically.
1995 N reg Citroen ZX 1.9d. ran as a playmate for the transit.
1999 V reg Mercedes E300 Turbodiesel Auto. loved its comfort and space. engine had no compression and i couldnt gel with the auto box no matter how hard i tried.
1998 R reg Ford Puma. without doubt THE most fun car ive ever owned. sadly missed.
2002 02 reg Ford Focus 1.8 tddi estate. most overrated car ever, IMO. good car but VERY boring
2001 51 reg Mercedes C220 cdi. family owned since 23 months old/7k miles. much loved but could be time to change. cant find anything i like though.

Had one - bought it ex demo, 32 miles on the clock, the rep still tried to flog me a "new" one for only a grand more :-o

A week later during some pretty bad weather, it filled up with water, turned out the steering column (etc) holes from the LHD/RHD conversion had not been blanked.
