A man I truly dislike (being kind) and someone who has used the very system he claimed to be against to amass a fortune.

An equally appalling excuse for a man, utterly clueless about finance (Gold), a bully and someone who ran and hid as soon as his time was up.

Between the pair of them they perfectly demonstrated the usual Leftie policies by "eventually running out of other peoples money"

They claimed to be "for the ordinary working person" yet managed to hit them as hard as possible in the pocket whilst smiling and telling everyone "things will only get better" (I didn't like that song when it was released and them using it for "spin" made it even worse)

The comments about Blair are accurate but Brown saved crapitalism by socialising the Banks debts. I can legitimately be critical of that as I want the whole rotten system to collapse but for you to criticize a man who saved the economic system you support seems a bit rich.
I doubt very much that Brown sold the gold on his own initiative, he'd have had advice from a civil servant or even a battery of civil servants. Nor was Brown an economist, but both Blair and Cameron have PPE degrees from Oxford

Brown was inept in every way, he manipulated every part of out economy using the excuse "I am increasing spending on the NHS" to justify over 150 tax increases year on year during his tenure as chancellor and PM (Darling was his puppet).

He bailed the banks out in a global economic crash, had he no the country would have gone down along with millions of people.

He ANNOUNCED he was going to do it before and oddly enough the price plummeted and he still went ahead, cost us millions, who advised him is irrelevant, the fact he went through with it is bad enough and as he was in charge it is down to him, anyone stupid enough to actually go through with it should be put in the tower

his error was in not raising taxes more, basic keynesian economics, when an economy is overheating [house prices had tripled] you raise taxes, you take money out of the system. But hey with some people what ever he did would be a fault...I hear he caused the 2001 Tsunami by letting his bath water out:rolleyes:

If he was acting on advice when he sold the gold, like all politicians who thought they were on a winner, he rushed to the front to take the credit for it though!

I'm still open mouthed that he thought it was a good thing thing to do especially at bargain basement prices and worse still, why nobody around No 10 had sufficient sense of duty to stop him.

Because he would not tolerate anyone with a differing opinion to his own. He populated his staff with yes-men... rather like Obama as it happens. Anyway it happened while he was in No.11; his staff had studied the volatility of our gold reserves and wanted to diversify the risk. So, they proposed selling around half of the total national reserve. Broon was a vocal supporter of this.

Gold sales were announced in May '99 when the price stood at US$282.40/oz. Compare with US$850/oz in 1980..! We gave the markets TWO MONTHs advance notice of the auctions, so of course the traders sold short. We sold 395 tons of gold at an average of US$275.40.

The net loss to the economy was almost exactly $127 million based on the market conditions at the time.

Spot rate for gold today is.... $1240.3/oz.

His error was in not knowing what to do unless it involved increasing the price of fuel or Booze.

As soon as his tenure finished he ran back to the highlands and hid, sticking his sorry face out only to back Jimmy Krankie in a ridiculous bid to bankrupt Scotland

So since he sold off the gold has anything drastic happened to the country since.. Its not everyday that one goes out to buy gold.
Surely Brexit wasn't his fault....
I think Maggie selling off the public services was a much bigger and catastrophic affair.

The statement on bladder control was made by one of his close protection detail in an interview.

So it is only Tory politicians who disparage their opponents? Interesting take on reality.

I was offering a preference for the man, not the party or policies. Neither interest me currently.
But it will need a change of leadership, and policies, for me to be tempted to put a cross in the labour box.

Over emotional clap trap

Massive problems in some of America's universities over the lest 10-15 years now as regards student attitudes. Not just political like this, but the way in which students view themselves in relation to the employment sphere around them. Tutors prohibited from giving critical feedback; "contemplation rooms" being established for students to escape lectures if they are concerned about aspects of life...

What is wrong with ten pints of Guinness, a mighty meaty pizza and nightclub dance floor so sticky you leave your shoes behind I don't know. Oh and the odd lecture or exam.

Their universities aren't on this planet anymore. I've heard the phrase "special snowflake" used to describe people like this (bold is my emphasis):

Prager University has published a new video which is an instant classic. Haverford College student Olivia Legaspi compares her experiences as a college student to her job at McDonald’s which gave her the opportunity to attend college and explains why her job was more educational.

Legaspi suggests that when she was working at McDonald’s, there were no trigger warnings before irate customers complained to her and no safe spaces to which she could retreat.

She correctly explains that if she complained to her boss that the fast pace of her work made her uncomfortable, he would have handed her a final paycheck and showed her to the door.

She also speaks at length about the problem solving skills and self reliance she took away from her job at the restaurant and that she appreciated the opportunity to acquire those skills.

In other words, Olivia Legaspi is exactly the type of young person you would want to hire if you were an employer.

Here’s the video description from Prager University:

Can working at McDonald’s better prepare a young adult for life than attending college? For Haverford undergraduate Olivia Legaspi, college taught her that her feelings are more important than anything; but working at McDonald’s she learned that serving others comes first. Which of those lessons is more important? Olivia Legaspi explains.
