Hi all
The subject line says it all really
My parents' vehicle - and needless to say the repair cost (Merc dealers) are astronomical / not affordable.
The proactive replacement of the 'bicycle' chain would've been the obvious and preferred plan of action.
Now the subsequent (but yet to be determined) damage to the engine etc and repairs thereof is a major concern and headache.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback / advice / suggestions.
2004 C180 Kompressor Automatic and 160,000 on the clock.
Thank you!!

Hello and welcome

Simplex chain issues in the M271 are well documented, the sprockets wear allowing the chain to jump a tooth or two causing lots of expensive damage.

You really need to find a good Mercedes indie

Depending when it jumped will depend on what the damage is.
If you're extremely lucky it won't have damaged the valves and pistons.
If it was running at the time it jumped there will almost certainly be bent valves. If it was at high revs when it jumped the damage could be extreme.
The head will need to come off to check valves and pistons. At a minimum it will need sprockets, chain, tensioner and a head gasket set.

There must be some good scrappers in Cape Town. Have an indie inspect the timing chain and sprockets before replacing the damaged motor.
