So yesterday myself and a few mates had a day out in Brands Hatch.. great fun! It was "my first time"

There were a couple of veterans in our group but myself and two others took out the Track Obsession track spec Clio 197 for the day. The clio has various upgrades, mainly the brakes, wheels/tires, seats and roll cage. It was great fun to drive with the exhaust sounded extra throaty, which I think was enhanced by the removal of interior trims etc and an encouraged 6500RPM shift point :)

Conditions started out damp, with many off track excursions and some stern warning to many of the more eager participants. After by noon the sun was out and dried up the track, which when complemented with my growing confidence, made for a number of more spirited laps.

Personal highlight of the day: Just before things wrapped up for the day, I had the privilege of getting a few laps in the Clio as a passenger with Ashley Hand, who won the British GT Championship last year. Initially Ash gave a few spirited laps, which seemed pretty quick. After the few laps Ash turns to me and says, "Right, one fast one!"... i'm just thinking... okayyy then! Upon reflection, Ash was just warming up the tires.. the fast lap involved either full on acceleration on the straights or full on lateral force in bends etc.. when we got back to the pits, there was a nice odour of burnt rubber! Perfect finish to the day!

There were plenty of other cool cars about and varying levels of modification and complexity. Not many exotics really. There was a nice light blue Jaguar XKR and I would say the quickest of the day was a nice red Lotus Elise. That thing really just whizzed around the track.

I think we paid £210 each for the entire experience, which included a few little extras such as helmet and bits/bobs.

This is an experience I would recommend to anybody who has an interest in cars. Motorsports was never something that I would have given a second thought to.. but that has all changed and now I want to buy a track car. Currently "browsing" at the moment. Do MB make a suitable track car. I would like something super light. All I can think of is the SLK. I'd like something with a platform that would enable about 250/300 BHP in the longer term.

Not an SLK!! Look at a Porsche 944S2/turbo or preferable a 968. I've this week swopped a 968 for an R171 SLK280 and I'm finding it fidgety and far less engaging than the 968, would not like to track it. Then there's cars like the Elise, VX220 or many others. 968's can be surprisingly quick - a couple of years ago we went to an AMOC meet at Brands, there were 3 968's in the Intermarque challenge against a load of AM's, Ferraris etc, quali was damp and the 968's were 1,2 and 4 on the grid and 1st and 3rd at the finish, the more powerful stuff would catch the 968's on the straights but could not live with them through the twisty bits - and this was on the GP circuit! I think if they'd been using the Indie circuit the 968's would have run away from everything.

Lotus / Caterham or other track focused car is ideal, Mercedes are not (well not out of the box anyway)

About the only lightweight car MB made was the Smart Roadster but even in Brabus form it's not track competitive. With a Hayabusa conversion however...

The best entry level track car is a Clio. Great handling, cheap as chips and fairly simple.

Yea that is true.. on the track.. the Clio I drove was £4k, which wasn't bad really. I could have one of them!

Oooh that one was fun for me.. Butterflies in the stomach when done right :D It was also the first point, I nearly lost the car.. but thankfully recovered. I have a smile on my face right now just thinking about it...

w201 190e 2.3 16/ 2.5 16 or an evo 1 would be my choice as you won't loose any money when you come to sell on.

My spelling of tyre when trying to trigger keefysher, lol. But seriously when I have a typo like that you could just let it slide. If you decide against it.. you should also pull up everybody else on their little mistakes.. Your constant commentary on my "americanisms" is feeling a little overplayed now and I am beginning to resent it.

If there is a collective issue with the "dissolution" of your language I am sure that can be addressed accordingly.

Good shout on the Evo 1.. I like the look of those and agreed that there are some cars out there that have a certain value when not messed up and don't depreciate further.

EDIT: LMAO The Evo 1s aren't as cheap as I thought they would be.

Until a few years ago you could get an Evo 1 for about 20K. How much are people asking now?

There are still quite a lot of cheap R129 500SL available. Strip out the interior to loose a couple of hundred kgs and have a very nice flying machine!

And are an appreciating classic.
Personally I wouldn't use anything 'classic' - parts harder to get, has value etc.
Other options are MX5, Fiesta/Focus ST etc - really depends how much you're prepared to risk/spend.

Paddock Hill bend is a fun place to watch racing - it's a blind apex, off camber and drops away like crazy. You don't really appreciate the drop watching on TV, but standing there looking at it (as I've done many times as our PCGB region monthly meets were at The Kentagon just by the main entrance to the paddock) it looks terrifying - which is why there's a massive run off area of kitty litter before you get to the tyre wall. Even so, the tyre wall does get visited at times!!

Mate in NZ had a Fiat Bambino (also called a 500) with a Kawasaki 1000 engine mounted behind the passenger. That was very quick.
He then built a Suzuki SC100 with a 1300 bike engine in the back. That used to embarrass Aussie V8s on the track.

The one thing you can guarantee with track days is that they will require an endless stream of money for entry, tyres, repairs and 'essential' modifications.

That's why he races 2CV's - he does the occasional track day for shake-down testing, he says he goes right around the outside of Ferrari's on the bends as the owners can't or won't push them. Cost and large bank balance doesn't necessarily equate to skillage
