can someone remind me of the proportion of fuel cost that is tax? Then contrast this regressive tax with the low tax that many of the wealthiest individuals and corporations manage to avoid.;)
This is a mickey mouse budget from a mickey mouse goverment.

100 litres in April 2010 = £119.90
100 litres in February = £126.90
100 litres yesterday = £132.9
100 litres today = £131.90

So with inflation standing at an all time high of 4.4% the fuel should no more than £125.9 per litre from last Aprils prices.

The government hasn't given us anything we're worse off than we were last year.

The cycle repeats and, as in 1979, the tories are trying to put the economy back together after a Labour term of well meaning incompetence and mismanagement.
I'm sure we'll all have them marked as non caring rich boys again. So this budget surprised me. They're hitting the rich (according to JasonW's informative links) and eased the pressure on the poor.
Clobbering the oil companies and using the funds raised to ease up on the motorist - Something of a robin hood act really.
This struck me as a socialst budget in the most part, but with some financial prudence built in and a bit of sense. If this is what a Con-Dem mash up produces, long may it last.
Hell, even the evil corporates are thinking of coming back and paying tax here (rather than other countries) as a result!!

we are in this pickle because of the Banking Crisis and all the politicians supported the bailout. In addition we have had 30 odd years of Thatcherite/Blairite (no difference) economic policies that have promoted the de-industrialsation of Britain. Germany with an industrial base can grow its way out of recession the Uk with no industrial base has to starve its way out.
This budget is useless and the clowns in charge have no economic sense or literacy. Short of revolution the only answer is a hefty dose of keynsian spending.

80p is tax and duty
50p is the cost of the fuel

Daylight robbery if you ask me. Both Tory and labour are to blame for the high tax.

Can you qualify those figures, my understanding was 72p was tax.

How many filling stations have already reduced the pump prices by 1p, none that I saw on my travels today, yet they're quick enough to put the prices up......

Those figures were given on radio 5 live, where they were having discussion on fuel prices around 20 minutes ago.

I saw one on my way home yesterday evening. It's usually the case though, they are quick to pass the cost on even on current stocks.....yet if the price drops it is a different story.

The 1p they gave us is a shambles, yes we were lucky to not have 5p stuck on the price, but who are they kidding by thinking that giving us a 1p reduction (that we will never see as the price will creep back up next week) (that is if it ever goes down to begin with) is going to help the economy. Any manufacturer who has already increased the price of his product to compensate him for the fuel costs isn't going to reduce the price because of a 1p drop. We the motorist really are being stuffed, not only by this government, but by previous governments and no doubt future governments. Happy days right enough :(

If my memory serves me right, when tony Blair first came to power, we saw mass fuel protest, when the fuel prices were well below a £1 a litre, can recall the exact price. So why have we not seen protest on that scale again, when the price has increased so much since 1997.

Yes that is probably true, and also the organisers of that protest were more than likely Tories voters.:(

As suspected garages won't be dropping the price of fuel by 1p straight away, also less than 50% of filling stations have reduced the price by around half a pence and others are saying they won't be dropping the price until fresh supplies are delivered....but they're quick enough to increase the price when it goes up
