Well, the car is booked in tomorrow at Millennium Mercedes in Bedford for a diagnostic check. If it's the MAF sensor I'll get that ordered and swapped out.

I brought it into work this morning and, aside from a beautiful drive, I have an error to report- possibly linked to the "lack of power" issue. It on;y happened once- on depressing the loud pedal, the engine did not respond... flooring the pedal, the engine would pick up maybe 1-2 seconds later. There was a significant delay in the engine response. I stopped, turned the engine off, back on again (it works for computers and nuclear reactors, thought it might work on a Merc!) and everything was fine again.

Just to add, since the car was repaired following the "breakdown", it seems to have much more power; I accidentally spun the wheels yesterday which I've never managed to do before. Could this be the results of the transmission fluid change showing after ~150 miles of driving?

Fingers crossed, a 10mm nut holds it on and one electrical connector.

Ordered it on Friday afternoon. £40 for an ex S-klasse part as per previous discussion. Arrived 1100hrs on Saturday; fitted 1200hrs Saturday.

The car now behaves almost like it should do. Still maybe a bit of power lacking- perhaps its me being gentle in the wet, perhaps it's becuase it's still in W mode. However and much more tellingly, average mpg figure has risen from anywhere between 5- 10- 15 (depending on trip) to 24.5 on a 110 mile round trip. I'm pleased with that.

NB two electrical connectors, looks like one for data at the top (7 pole?), and one for power (2 pole) at the bottom. The bottom one is quite tight and fairly well hidden so be careful if you ever need to do this yourself.

Hardest part- getting the top data connector in, it just didn't want to go.

Well gents, resurrecting this post from the dead, I have just changed the MAF sensor with a brand new genuine Bosch part. I then reset all DTCs using my i980.

Results:

1. Mpg figure has immediately improved and now reads 12mpg average over 3 miles rather than 4-5mpg over the same disyance.
2. Engine noise seems slightly louder, more of a V8 burble than before.
3. No improvement in performance at all. I timed 0-60mph twice and came out at 10.9s and 13.2s over the same stretch of road (a 60mph limit I hasten to add!)

When I got home I went into the i980 and found the following 11 error codes:

P2011-002: A16/1 knock sensor 1, right. Signal implausible (open circuit/ short to ground) (P0325).
P2011-064: code not available.
P2006-002: B17/8: Charge air temperature sensor. Short circuit to positive or open circuit (P0112) or (B17/8 Right charge air temp sensor short to pos or open circuit or B2/5b1 intake air temp sensor short to pos or open circuit).
P2006-016: code not available.
P2006-001: Self adaptation of mixture formulation for right bank at limit value at part load (enrichment over permissible limit (P0171) ).
P2016-128: code not available.
P2085-001: Self adaptation for left bank blah blah same as above.
P2086-002: Same as above.
P2086-128: Code not available.
P2017-002: Same as above for right bank.
P2017-128: Code not available.

Those definitions are a bit all over the place for my liking.

They do look they may be old codes and that they hadnt erased properly.

Does the I980 allow you see actual values? If so, what is in the intake air temp sensor reading.
