Hoping someone can offer some advice....

I noticed over the last while that my 2006 CLK200 was getting a bit heavy on fuel so took it back to the independent dealer i bought it from. After running his diagnostics he said lambda sensor reading was wrong at high idle and that they would get necessary parts & fix it at next service that was due in 500kms. Also i notes that i had topped up the oil by approx 2 litres in the 15000kms since i bought it.

On monday i dropped them in my car and they gave me call yesterday to say that they spoke to local MB dealer to order the O2 sensor who said from the symtoms (high fuel and some oil usage) the fault is actually valve oil seals and head needs to come off the engine, new seals and valve guide rail needed and timing chain. From what was initially a moderate increase in petrol running costs they now say it will be 2500 euros to fix.

Are they trying it on? Has anyone else had similar problems with their motor?

I wouldnt have thought that 2 litres of oil over 15,000km was excessive oil consumption. Usually, a sign of worn valve seals is to see blue smoke from the exhaust whilst coasting down a hill.

A faulty maf could cause high fuel consumption.

Unfortunately the 271 engine does suffer from the exact problem your dealer describes although I did think the sticking valve situation had been sorted by 2006. The valve guides were not replaced due to high oil consumption but lean mixture adaption causing the valves to stick. When this happens 02 fault codes are normally stored.

Timing chains stretch on these engines and if they have to remve the head then you may as well have it done.

However I would have this thoroughly investigated by an Indy who knows these cars as panason1c has stated, it maybe something else.
