Hi,
I have leaking rear main oil seal on my 55 engine in my C43, would my M113 V8 have the same set up, the engine was originally from a MY 2000 208 CLK.
If so would cleaning this gallery add much labour time when replacing the seal?

No it wil add about fifteen minutes.

I may also have this problem since the car uses a bit more oil than usual. Is it just a cleaning of the gallery, or do you have to do some major repairs?

3 litres is an awful lot. Surely theres a trace somewhere. A leak would be blindingly obvious and burning that amount would surely show up in the exhaust and the plugs?

How much oil are you consuming??????

Perhaps 1 liter every 1500 miles. Strange thing is that after a service the oil level, on the instrument, is OK for the first 4000-5000 miles and then it seems to need oil every other 1000-1500 miles. First thing I'm going to do is to make sure that the oil level sensor is OK, but I am a little worried that there might be something wrong...

(I hope I converted correctly to miles since we're using kilometers in Sweden, so the engine needs perhaps one liter every other 1500-2000 km)

Hi,
I,m sure I have read somewhere, that upto a litre of oil every 1,000 miles is considered normal for a M113 V8 Engine, IIRC this was from a Mercedes document though I,m b***ered if I can remember where.

We have a Beetle...in the handbook it says up to 1 litre per 1000kms is acceptable!!!

I would consider 1 litre over a thousand miles perfectly fine

Breathing Gallery

These symptoms are very similar to a couple of cars we have seen in the last year with the breathing gallery behind the crank seal casing is blocked.
But obviously over filled oil will do the same :D
I would say you have a pretty deep puddle in the inlet manifold looking at those plugs

So is there anyway to check the breathing gallery other than removing the geakbox.....as much as that is cheaper than having the piston rings replaced, if it isnt that its still £400 i could have saved toward it!

Many thanks as always!

I would pop the top off the inlet manifold to see if it's swimming in oil first
