While getting the old contaminated diesel ditched i learned that the pistons and rods are now probably made of aluminium. I was under the impression they were still harder metal than that. Now i understand the concerns re the pistons and con rods.

Pistons definitely aluminium. Rods I'm pretty sure are not.

Oh. The garage we took the contaminated diesel to reckoned they were both aluminium. Hence the concern with bending the con rods. Am i right in thinking that the con rods are short for ‘connecting’ rods to the camshaft?

Connecting rods to the "crank shaft" (not camshaft)

If you've bent a conrod, which is very unlikely given the history on this thread so far, you will certainly notice it when you eventually get your engine running.

Again - Don't get sidetracked.
Just concentrate on getting the motor running. Everything else at this point is secondary to that, and any other work needed when the motor is idling smoothly can be assessed and sorted later.

Back in Hedge end again. With a pump. Bless her my late mum had a pond setup and Jane (my girlfriend) asked if there was a pump and hoses with it. Turned out there was. Tested. Working. So will use that to clean out the fuel tank now. Then 4 trips to the fuel station down t road with me 5 litre jobby and bobs your auntie.

Technically they're one-time clamps. It is possible to use them again with the right tool, but I would suggest that you replace any you remove with jubilee clips.
To remove, squeeze with pliers/mole wrench or similar and the clamp will unclip. It helps if you twist the pliers as you squeeze.
Just wondering why you need to remove them? If they are on the tank inspection covers, you can just move the covers to one side when you're cleaning out the tank.

Thought as much. Luckily there’s screwfix, Toolstation and Halfords so i can get two more.

Okay. I am guessing the hoses connected between these two inlet things A. Need removing B. Need tying up first or otherwise they could be lost in the tank? There’s white stuff everywhere. God knows how it got in there.

Oh yes. Those foam tiles are exactly what you think they are. Kids play mat foam squares. Girlfriend had some old ones lying about in the garden. They make brilliant crawling mats and great kneeling mats. And only around £5 ish for a set. Bargain!!!

Robbie - I think Lidl had boxes with Jubilee Clips last week. If you've got one nearby it's a cheap diversion,
