So I foolishly snapped the plastic connector while swapping thermostat and had to get a new one of these (£90!), the old one is sandwiched on the right side underneath some injector lines and the rail. Seems like a lot of work to take all these off, any problem with running the new line over the top of the rail if it reaches? Don't see that it'd be any hotter than under it.

If you can just pull off those hose, cant you feed it again under the metal pipes (oppoiste of how you removed it). dont forget to put the air filters back :)

No, I cut the hose. There's plastic connectors permanently fixed which won't fit through the gap the hose could. According to a sprinter forum someone dragged it over on theirs so hope it will fit on mine. My friend said he'd never remove injector rails himself because of the high pressure and risk of going wrong.

there is no pressure when ignition is off... but sure chances to mess something rises when more parts are removed :)

I am not seeing big risks routing it over the rail unless it can wear itself to some edge/engine plastic cover

It could (emphasis added) wear itself down from contsant vibrations on the metal pipe.
Mercs are cleverly made, if you look around your engine bay you will see lots of pipes with a larger buffer on them where then contact /rest on another part.

That was my thoughts too. I will monitor it and find something to cushion it perhaps. I think that they designed with this piece not being a service item and so routed it neatly under.

[Update]
I ran the line over the injector, cable tied it to minimise any friction/rubbing. A sprinter owner did this and said it's been 200,000km since and it's fine.
My odometer was 149,884 miles at time of repair, if anyone wants to check with me in future how long it lasts like this. 20201009_190126.jpg
