Mercedes 2004 c180 Kompressor Saloon Remote issue

I have a problem with my remote: it doesn't lock or unlock the car eventhough it locks or unlocks once pointed to the IR on the door handle. I have just bought the car recently from a trader and they weren't honest about about car. They told me that just the battery in the remote needs changing but that didn't solve the problem. I am living in London so please advise me what to do. Thank you

Hello and welcome

There is a small coil in the key that can become dislodged with dropping the keys. That is why the RF side of the key stops working but the IR side still works.

If you’re handy with a soldering iron you can solder it back on or replace it.

Actually it's a brand new key programmed by a private locksmith so I don't think it's the cause. Thank you anyways

What is the radio reception like?
It is common for the aerial amp to fail which can also affects the RF part of the remote unlock.

Radio reception is perfect. The number 8 fuse is also good. I went to another locksmith and they made a new remote, believing and telling me that theirs will work 100% but the result is the same. It doesn't lock/unlock the car without pointing to the handle.

Out of interest. How much is a new key costing you?

Have you tried it up close to the antenna on the window?

It cost £100 and yes I tried every possible angle and place

Thank you for your recommendation but I don't think it's the key as even another key made by another locksmith doesn't lock/unlock. (Actually I didn't accept the second key as it didn't work)

Go to someone who can provide a key that works

I don't think the issue is the key.
The issue appears to be the car. So either use your legal rights and return the car to the dealer (who is obliged to sort it at his cost) or find an MB specialist and pay from your pocket to have it sorted. I know which I'd do.

Thank you guys for your help. I have solved the problem. It was the Aerial Antenna. Today I changed it and now it is working perfectly.
