Hi there,

Does anyone know if it is reasonably easy to retrofit an automatic dimming rear view mirror to an A Class W169?

I am hoping that the required wiring will be in place and all that is needed is to fit the mirror with the sensor unit built in. Could it really be that simple? I have my doubts!

Would I need to have the automatic dimming mirror option activated in the ecu?

I hope that someone out there may know.

Regards,

Steve

It maybe possible.

What year is yours?

My ML has a lot of pre-wired items.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I have a 2006 A200 Elegance.

I just had cruise control retro-fitted and all the cabling was in place for that, just needed the stalk and coding.

Who fitted that for you?

Maybe ask them?

The wiring should be there, it is on my ML. I am in the process of upgrading mine :)

Good Luck

All a auto dimming mirror needs is a 12 volt supply, that is all there is too it :D

Hi televsion,

Many thanks for your reply and good news that it is a relatively easy retro-fit!

Based on your response, I am thinking of taking a 12 volt feed from the centrally located map reading lights in the headlining; but this would provide a permanent 12 volt feed to the mirror i.e it would always be powered on.

Is this a good idea or would it drain the battery over time? Is there anywhere else local to the mirror that I could take a 12 volt feed which would be switched via the ignition switch i.e. the rain sensor?

Regards,

Steve

You should find a spare socket in the Overhead Control Panel (Reading light cluster). Simply plug the RVM in there. Anything like my old S203 and the sockets are sized for the correct accessory/option. You'll need to drop the OCP out of the headlining

Many thanks for your reply.

If I can just find out the MB part number for the cable that runs between the OCP and the mirror with the right connectors on each end then I should be in business!

Hi EVO5MAN,

As above you will only figure out what the situation is when you take it apart.

Going off topic, on your W169 boot trim, where it butts up against the glass around the middle brake lamp is there a very small gap or none at all?

I have an A-class as well.

Hi Jdokal,

On my W169 there is a small gap between the glass and the boot trim which is a constant width all the way across the bottom adjacent to the 3rd brake light location.

Hope this helps.

I will post an update on the mirror question once I have located the parts and striped the existing mirror out.

Regards,

Steve

Member npuk has done this on an A class but I think he is on holiday, a switched live would be beter than a constant live.

The correct socket in the OCP will be the better option. If your model/year was optioned with auto-dim RVM it will be there.

Thanks Evo5man for checking your A-class for me. I think my boot trim is like your then, I have had it off for a long time because I knew I would be retrofitting the reversing camera. I just couldn't remember how close it sat to the screen.

Been in hospital for the last 6 weeks, only now catching up on posts.

My car came with auto dim rear view mirror as factory option but on other models the socket is already there in the overhead panel in cars without it so I would think it would be the same on the W169.

Hi NPUK,

Thank you for your reply, sorry to hear that you have been in hospital; I hope that you are well on the way to recovery.

I have now sourced a mirror and the cable is on order. I will post a final message on the forum when I have completed the fit.

Regards,

Steve

Is the cable not part of the roof wiring loom?

Apparently not, the mirror has a cable socket on it and the OCP has a spare socket on it. You just need the cable with a plug on each end to connect the two components.

Need help!

Please if someone can help me.
I want to retrofit dimming mirror in my w245 (same as w169), got a new mirror and have problem with roof light panel which doesnt have input for dimming mirror.
I also get new light panel with that input but now I realized that connectors are not same. On my old panel all wires are in one plug housing and light sensor cable went down to probably SAM unit and IC (it is not inserted in panel unit)...
Here is photo...

This is an easy retrofit.

Simply buy the right mirror and the small loom plugs straight into the OCP. The socket is there.

Then its just coding the OCP.
