Your control box came this morning and I have fitted the new relay and I will post it back today. I must say that the old one did not look that bad contact wise, Time is too short for me to set up a test rig so I have not been able to test it.

In all fairness the thanks should go to ti9999 Tony Leach, the article was in the Mercedes club Gazette, it was a very good article indeed.

I have only fitted the relay, with much simpler tools and it did not take long, if it had not been for Tony, non of this would have been possible with out having the car in front of me to see which relay it was.

So a big thank you tony for joining in this thread and providing the relays

I'll second that! I have had so much help from this site, it's amazing! I spent £540 on a replacement "in car" fuse box with an independent dealer when I first bought the car. One headlamp not working, thought it was just the bulb, then side lights and indicators failed. Wipers went slow, turned out that was a broken linkage, but a lot of money overall. Maybe, just maybe with the help that is here I could have saved a bit!! Keep up the good work and thanks guys. ps. don't let them get you down or stop you helping!! Owen

I just found this thread after searching online for this issue. I think my 1998 SLK230 has developed this exact problem. The indicator/hazard lights come on but do not flash. This has been happening every so often for a year or two, but now seems to be a permanent fault.

Unfortunately my car has today failed its MOT due to the fault. The mechanics couldn't trace the problem, and have advised me to go to an auto electrical specialist or merc dealer before having a re-test.

Having read this thread, it looks like it wll be a £600 bill from mercedes for a new CCM..just to make the lights flash!

Is there anyone on the forum that would be able to help fix the fault or with souring the required part?

Many thanks in advance!

Philip

wow, well, that was all quite a read!!

err...welcome to the forum slk driver :D:D

it is sometimes possible to just clean up the contacts on the relay (i have done this, all well for 8 months so far).

but at £50 for a proper repair by the genius and minor celebrity that is TELEVISION, snap his hand off!!!!

(hope i'm not overposting)

Hi Malcolm,

Wow - a £50 repair sounds fantastic. What would I need to do to arrange that? I noticed an earlier person on the thread posted you their CCM, I could do that if I knew how to take it out. I'm based in Bristol if that makes any difference.

Thanks again,

Philip

1998 230SLK indicator flashers again

Dear "Television" Malcolm
New member, with what seems to be a common problem, which it appears you can fix! Indicators and hazard warning flash only intermittently - OK for a few days, then steady light only for a few days, then work again for a few days, then steady light only for a few days......and so on.
That you actually seem to enjoy solving strangers' problems like this is (hopefully) a miraculous find. If you can replace just the flasher unit, I'd be absolutely delighted to drive over to the West Country by the sea, from South Wales by the sea, (using the lever to manually "flash" the indicators) and have the pleasure of meeting you into the bargain, we are I think the same generation.
Best regards Dan&Val
