That sounds very kind Malcolm - only problem is that neither Val nor I would have the beginnings of a clue how to find or recognise the ECU, and the thought of disconnecting it and removing it (let alone replacing it afterwards) fills us with total terror. Perhaps our sign-in should be "dumbunnies" not "Dan&Val".
If you could source the part so I could buy it from you, or if you could advise how/where to source it, should my local MB specialist be able to do the job? So far their response (which I'm sure you have heard before) is "no problem squire, just give us £600-odd + VAT + labour and we wil replace the whole ECU". They've said it is unique to the vehicle by VIN no. and can't be interfered with, but that does not seem to be altogether accurate does it, at least so far as the flashers controller bit goes?
Or is there ANYTHING we could arrange whereby you could do the repair on the vehicle? I am absolutely staggered at the volume of problems you have solved on so many different MB models, helping people so readily on the Forum, so I must of course respect your wishes. Please feel free to email me direct if you prefer.
Best regards Dan

Malcolm you are a star (three-pointed of course!). Thank you so much. I turned off my PC at 10pm but see you were still at it at nearly 2 am. Wow.
I look forward to hearing from you and I have asked Jill Foden of the membership office to give you my direct e-mail and telephone contacts. Sincerely, Dan (Dan&Val).

Malcolm I had a message from Jill Foden to say she had passed my request (to give you my contact details) to the Club IT department, so maybe it was not such an easy process as I thought. There must be a way to exchange contacts securely without posting them on the web as you have exchanged postal addresses with other enquirers; so I'll wait and hope.
Meanwhile, I have stupidly managed to injure my back and it looks as if I won't be driving ANYWHERE for a few days, and although at a pinch one can indicate manually (click/off/click/off/click/off etc) Val won't drive the car without proper indicator flashers. So no immediate urgency, but we are still very appreciative indeed of your expertise and kindness. Dan

I do have a magnetic BMW badge that you could pop onto the boot so that Val could drive the car

Malcolm we hope you will not be embarrassed if we use the forum to thank you publicly, for sorting our indicator malfunction with a screwdriver, a bit of clean white paper, a healthy cynicism about a £650 ECU replacement being the only answer, and a lot of know-how! So thank you, sincerely.
Dan&Val.
P.S.You mentioned the problem of definition of skills. I was taught that a fitter knows when to kick an engine, but a mechanic knows where to kick it - while an engineer knows how hard to kick it.

It was very nice to meet you,,and an interesting chat while doing the job, it took a little longer than anticipated through one reason or another, but it all worked out fine, and trust that the remainder of your journey went well:D:D

Indicator Fault

Hi - I have just joined the forum after finding the detail on the indicator problem. I think my 1996 SLK W170 has the same fault - last week the indicators stopped working and just came on solid. This week they started working again but not sure reading all the stuff above how long for ? My Husband said he would try to clean the relay in the CCM suggested above but is not sure where to find this ? Can anyone let me know how easy it is to get to and where it is ? thanks Donna

It is in the electric box passenger side,, we often replace the relay it depends on what it is like. If you are not used to working in the delicate electronic components I would not advise a DIY as they cost £600 to replace..

Welcome to the forum :D:D

Hello, I also have just joined the forum and have exactly the same problem with the SLK230 indicators as described by DonnaSLK. Is there any possibility that Malcolm (Televison) may be able to help?

BTW, I think this forum is great, real expertise and freely given. A pleasure to read.

You are not being thick,,it is me not being that helpful ;):D

Lift the bonnet and remove the screws from the big box on the passenger side on engine compartment.

The relay is 35 in the link,it is the big one with the sloping top. On this relay you have a white plug at the front, pull the plug towards the front on the car and it will slide back and you can lift it out. Lift the big handle that goes over both sides and the multi connector plug lifts off,,just release the 2 clips one each side and the whole box will lift out.

I will send you an Email with my address
