2014 Mercedes C220 Bluetec Sport Premium
Hi all

I recently purchased a C Class 2014 (W205) Bluetec Sport Premium.

I've just noticed that the tyre sizes on the front are the same as on the back?!
They're both 225/50 17 Y.

I thought rear wheel drive vehicles had bigger/wider tyres on the back as was evident in my last C Class (W204).

When I enquiry online about new tyres and put in the vehicle reg I'm given 2 separate sizes (1 for front and 1 for rear).
These are 225/50 17Y (front) and 245/45 17W.

Are staggered tyes/wheels optional or not and has this dealer or previous owner just changed the wheels themselves?

Welcome
they (like most Mercs ) would have started on a staggered set up but someone has changed to a square set up (often folks do this on winter tyres). Check your manual it will show what options you can use...

It does depend on what is actually fitted to the car you may have the same size all around but you’ll need to check the alloy size stamped into the rear of the wheel to be totally sure

Hi.
They are generally an optional extra in most cases at time of order, although some models they do come as standard.

The place where you are buying from is more than likely taking it for granted that you have Staggered Wheels.

NB: Not only are the Tyres differing sizes, the Wheel Width and Offset is also.

What options are listed in the fuel filler cap?
Many different wheel and tyre options were available new - same size front and rear isn't an issue and prolongs overall tyre life as you can move the back to the front etc.
You can also check the wheel sizes as it will be stamped on the inside of one of the spokes

Just did a quick search on your car and the below are tyre options - depending upon wheels fitted...

I have a W205 and the fronts are 225 and the rears are 245. Seems weird that someone would change to 225's all round. I would suspect that would be a get out for your insurer too as they apparently not standard. :(

I have a staggered setup - 7.5J fr and 8.5J rear and have the same size tyres all round as Crossclimates are not currently available in UK in 245/40R17.
It is a legally acceptable tyre/rim combo.

I think it would be hard given that you could have 205/55 R16s fitted as standard too but worth checking.
I think it is mainly a cosmetic change on some models.

I was told a few months ago that Michelins would have that size Crossclimate available this winter, currently they're only available in USA - I replaced the fronts on my S204 with Crossclimates but my rear GY Eagle F1's will last another year (maybe more) so I'm happy to wait!

Are the bolt holes deeper receesssed on the rears vs the front? I'm wondering if someone has put narrower tyres on the wider rear wheels?

It's always possible that someone has swapped the rear wheels. Or that the car didn't come with a staggered set-up - I've lost touch with the names, but does Bluetec imply some sort of eco version?

They're staggered on my car, but I know the SE was same size all round.

Staggered was a pain early on when I had my car and was doing more miles - would have been useful to be able to rotate the tyres and even out the wear.

It's not an insurance issue if the car was supplied like that and you didn't know it was wrong.

I'm also looking to replace the rears when available although I doubt it is worth it for 20mm especially as my tyres will likely need changing due to age before they are worn to the limits.

Hi guys

Thanks you all for your replies. I've looked into it further and spoke to another tyre fitter whos stated that W205 can have staggered and square. He said its not unusual and its totally legal. I also found an online retailer that gave me the option for both. It had a list of tyre sizes that usually fit this model and stated my tyre size and next to it said 'front and rear'.

Once again thanks for the replies.

First thing you should do is pull a rear wheel and look at what's stamped on the inside, one stamping should give you the rim width (7.5 or 8.5J) and the ET or offset, if it's 8.5J then I'm pretty sure you have a staggered setup so could go 245/40 rear and 225/45 fronts, which is what I have on my S204 c220.

Some cars now have same size wheels but mixed tyres. You need to look at the data card to be 100%

305s all round on mine (though I did run 225s on the rear for a while and it felt much better going into corners).
