Just driving home from shopping and came to a big hill and lost drive , management light came on fault code ( P0730 incorrect gear ratio ) barely got home the description of the fault is low fluid or electrical problem , also made a really funny wiring noise like a buzzing noise I've left it a few minutes and cleared the fault noise has now gone , noise was also there when not in drive and when engine running but noise has gone now , so I'm wondering if it's just low on fluid ? Been noticing over the last few weeks gear changes have not been as smooth as the used to be , do I need to buy a dipstick to check the transmission oil level ? Also how do I do it ? Engine running or not ? I may have a oil leak not checked yet as it's too wet today any advice or help would be much appreciated it's a 2.6 car 2003 .

Same box, and the same place for the dipstick tube;)

Ok thanks , does it sound like low oil ? That's what it feels like to me I once had an s type jaguar with the same problem and that was just low on oil , the noise was worrying though like a whining noise but then once I left it , it stopped as if all the oil had gone back down the box and stopped the noise I. Praying it's just oil fingers crossed !

To be truthful these boxes give very little trouble, they do have a pilot bush on the side and these can leak, it could be well low fluid.
I do not know about the lamp coming on, perhaps one of the indies can answer this bit.

When the speed sensor plate fails the box usually locks up in 2nd gear, so I do not think that

Engine ecu light is on due to the gearbox telling it to come on, it sounds to me like a blocked filter or low on oil, altho it could be that the box itself is shot.........

How much oil do these boxes hold ? Is it worth just looking at the filter first ? Has it got to be main dealer for oil and filter or euro parts etc ?

If you just change the filter then expect to put back 3,5 liters.......

Ok but I can get the bits in german and Swedish etc ? As long as I know that be a lot cheaper than mercedes also need to see if it's leaking I've gone back out to car now and no noise but I really think it's low on oil so fingers crossed that all it is management light is staying of anyway at moment I do diagnostics for a living so I hope it's just a new oil and filter may as well do engine while I'm at it , I hate these stupid no dipstick cars anyone have a length of engine oil dipstick as well ? Or amount it needs ?
