Both the CD and the printed Comand manual say that to turn off voice advice in nav, hold down the mute button for approx. 2 seconds while advice is being given. Sure enough, after two seconds there's a beep - but it has no effect! Does anyone know why, or if there's an answer?

Don't know why that's not working for you? Alternatively, while the sat nav is talking, can't you just turn the volume right down? I don't think that affects the volume of the radio/cd.

You can turn the volume down when she's yammering away as per above, you can also press the mute button when she starts up as well and that should stop her. Having said that mine starts at me again if I don't follow the route and she has to re-calculate. The mute button should keep her quiet for the whole journey but mine doesn't for some reason.

there was a pretty big software update for pre 2008 systems. maybe they changed the defaults and the manual is now wrong.

when it's working normally, you turn down the speech (when she's talking) and that become the new default..... pretty stupid if you turn it down too much as never hear to be able to get it back to usable levels - my fathers remembers that and nothing brings it back. what you can do is start a new route (where instruction will be there) - even if you can't hear - and keep turning it up just after you press enter... till you hear something

Pressing and holding the MUTE button simply stops the interruptions to your audio with traffic announcements. It does not affect the spoken navigation instructions.

If you press MUTE once when she is speaking, she will completely cease to speak!

So why does mine start up again?
If traffic conditions change and she re-routes she decides to start telling me the route again, despite my quite obvious request for her to STFU

sounds like a firmware update might be needed.
