Hi Folks,

I'm getting a bit of groaning on my power steering on my 2005 E270. Can anyone please advise where the fluid reservoir is located? It would appear as though it might be hidden under the plastic engine cover - with dark evenings and always at work I haven't had the opportunity to look yet. I appreciate the groaning may indicate fluid loss, so that will be investigated in due course...

Also, what kind of fluid do I need? Can I just grab something in Halfords?

Thanks in advance!

Nik

Mercedes only , dont use any other pas fluid . For a short time get you by you could use a universal fluid from Halfrauds and then later on flush it all out , and replace it with Mercedes PAS fluid

Would you be able to advise a specific grade I need to look for, please? This kind of information doesn't seem to come easily on the internet (although I'll look in the owners manual when I get home later).

Thanks again,

Nik

OP,

Dont bother with Halfords. You need the spec. Take a trip to yout local MB dealer.
PS fluid doesn't disappear so look for leaks.
Id be inclined to replace all the fluid, easy to flush.

It's more commonly known as CHF nowadays. If it's green . Which I think yours will be. If it's red it'll be automatic transmission fluid . Screenshot_20240116-202029.png

Thank you, that’s really helpful. I’ll hopefully get to check it on Friday.

Assuming it’s CHF can I simply top up with the Halfords stuff, or does it have to be MB?

Thanks…I have found that website to be utterly indecipherable, and probably need to go on some kind of training course to learn MB-speak, but I’m grateful for you taking the time to try and help me :)

It's all manufactured to a spec mercedes would of stated. It's ok to mix , I used a brand " comma " . No issues at all

Mine was a 2004 e320.

Hi folks, finally managed to get under the bonnet and check the fluid. It’s red - can anyone tell me which type that is, please?

Bought this stuff today…

Topped it off (used about 1/4 of the bottle) and it’s completely sorted. Smoother than ever, lighter steering, and completely silent. Very happy!

Thanks for your guidance.

Remove return line, lift front of car, lock to lock while filling - flush entire system. Steering will be heavenly.

Just to add that since topping up the fluid (as shown above) I've done at least 1000 miles, and everything remains ticketty-boo.

Thank you to all of you that contributed.
