Hi Folks,

Im looking to fit new rear discs and pads on my 2005 E270. I assume I can disable the brake assist thing by simply disconnecting the battery? Otherwise it all looks quite straightforward. Sorry for such a basic question!

Thanks,

Nik

That's why aux battery is fitted in car :)
(Honestly can't remember can car pull isolation relay if ignition off, doubt it)

Some people disconnect SBC unit, but it theory if you put car lock, wait 15 min and put you keys safe inside the house (if KeylessGo), it should be ok.

SDS and some other diagnostic devices can disable SBC.

That all sounds needlessly difficult. Am I reading it correctly that my car actually has two batteries? I'd prefer to have everything disconnected before I go risking my fingers near the brake calipers!

Yes 1 in the boot and 1 under the pollen filter. Right hand side in engine bay.

As for brakes you will most likely have to back off the handbrake to get discs off.

Great, thank you. You'd think, having owned the car for almost six years I'd know stuff like that. I guess it goes to show how reliable it's been!

Is the handbrake mechanism easy to fathom? It probably needs adjusting and lubricating anyway, as I don't think it's been touch since I've owned the car.

When I did the front brakes I disconnected the SBC multi easy connector. Less faff than anything else

Great idea, thank you, that sounds like the simplest approach. Where is that located, please?

On mine, when you stand in front of the car, it's by your left hip. It's a block with lots of 3/16in pipes.

I’m sure there is a lot on The YouTube if you search disabling SBC, or Mercedes rear brakes with sbc or similar

Judging by the amount of questions I'd think having a garage fit your brakes is the best bet tbh.

This is the sbc unit, the plug is on the side. Not too sure where abouts in the engine bay yours will be but this is what one is. Adjustments.jpg

I get what you're saying, but thankfully I'm not entirely inept. As a mechanical engineer of more than two decades I merely prefer to be prepared, so I don't waste time.

That said, I had a look yesterday, and both sides look like they have at least 5mm of pad visible on the outer pads, so I probably won't bother.

I'm easy on brakes anyway - I don't really tend to go charging around in the car, and in all honesty I'm not sure I've ever replaced the pads on the back. I've owned the car almost six years now!

Inside pads will be around 3mm or less then.
