Hi everyone,

I have a 2008 Jeep Grand Cheeroke WK 3.0 CRD. It has the Mercedes transmission.

It has started going into limp mode pretty often.

It will not change gears automatically (stuck at second gear) and it will not allow me to manually change gears (+-).

If I turn the car off and on it starts working fine.

There are no error codes for the transmission. Oil level is ok.
The only error code the computer shows is related to a bad DPF Sensor (also Mercedes one).

Sometimes, the transmission does a knocking sound when downshifting (It does it more often while I let go of the gas pedal or if I am coasting. It doesn't seem to do it while I am braking). It does not do it very often too, once in a while).

Does anyone know what may cause it?

Thank you.

Me -2019 GLC 350 coupe AMG line. Mrs- ford kuga 65 plate awd powershift .
Engine issues Inc the dpf will put the car into limp mode , the gearbox also goes into limp mode to protect the engine. Don't assume it's the gearbox at fault.

When you say the gearbox oil is ok , was it checked with the engine running , gearbox in P , on a level surface after a 25min drive to get it hot ?

What are you using to read codes?
Not all readers will read all codes.

Sorry for the late reply.

I am using a generic one. It now shows: U0402: Invalid Data Received From Transmission Control Module. I will take it to a Fiat dealership to check the codes with their own reader.

I meant it is ok as It was changed not too long ago

I understand it. I think it may be the gearbox as it also does a hard knocking sound once in a while when downshifting. Can it be caused by the DPF too? Also, now there is a new code showing as I mentionet above.

I have an 06 Jeep GC 3.0 , you need a Chrysler / Jeep / dodge/ Cadillac specific reader like an icarsoft bcii or the newer icarsoft pro.
As already mentioned the dpf will cause this type of gearbox behaviour, you need to sort the dpf out / clean it or whatever needs doing and then see if the gearbox behaviour is still there.
A generic code reader on these Jeeps will not show much up and will often lie as well, I would expect I think its a p0700 which is the standard “ there is a gearbox fault “ and then another stating something along the lines of say 2nd gear implausibility.
I would suggest it’s better to go and purchase an Icarsoft or another name of specific code reader for your vehicle as the Jeep/ Fiat dealer will read and clear the codes you have and they will probably appear again as soon as you drive it. The cost of codes read at the dealer will be at least half of what you can get a specific code reader for.
Whereabouts are you in the country ?

Thank you. I will sort the DPF problem first.

I am not in UK. The dealer here in my country has a cheap offer just for the inspection (just to read the codes, not clear them. So I will just pay for that). Will try that firstly and will check the precise DPF error and fix it. Then, I will see to buy one of the readers you mentioned.
