A little disappointed with the first SLK 280 we veiwed, but got some more to check over. Just to make sure I wasn't expecting too much from the car.

In what way did you find it disappointing? Be interested to hear as I can confirm if that’s standard on them...

They’re not an R230 SL500...

Took a trip to Lakeside retail in convoy with the SLK, my daughter asked my better half to drive the SLK as she easily gets lost so parents ended up driving the kids again, took me back a few years lol.

Quite a pleasant drive around the south east of England including the M25, top down and AC on :D:p:cool:

Blobcat, I think we have been spoilt with the 500's in space and performance. The passenger seat in the right back position gave me no real leg room for my long legs. My Missus said perhaps you didn't have it back all the way? L( I think the 170 had more leg room)lack of room inside for small extra convient items (our old SLK 320) was the same. The performance was disappointing too compared to the 500. But as you say it's not an SL 500 ;) Mind you the performance was a little better than our 320
We have some more 171's lined up, as well as the SLK 350.
I passed on the car, which was a pity as it had all the bells and whistles, and a full post code command
But like everyone says never buy the first you see.
Watch this space :)

The R171 is bigger passenger compartment and luggage than the R170.
I find the R230 quite big and unwieldy compared to the R171 but I can see the suspension and engine benefits. Just not enough to justify the extra expense for me at the moment. Was very tempted with and SLK R172 55AMG today...

IMG_20190804_191817.jpg IMG_20190804_191804.jpg IMG_20190804_191800.jpg yesterday I took the front bumper off to see if I could repair the connection between air con condenser and high pressure pipe leading to the dryer. There was some cross threading visible at the very beginning of the thread on the condenser pipe, but it did connect and tighten and felt ok.Then I covered the whole joint with JB Weld and put silver kitchen foil for full redneck Bodge effect...Another £ 37.99 a/c refill booked,so we will see

1999 CLK430, 2007 VITO 3.0V6 , W124's (1994 320TE , 1993 220TE ) , 07 2.5 X-Type
Took the Oil pressure sensor/sender off the Old W124 (220TE) and used it to diagnose a dropping oil pressure on the 320TE 124,and apart from the main dealer giving me the incorrect crush washers it wasn't as bad a job as i feared, its a bit look where it is, then get your hand up and do it by feel , as well as restarting on the thread blind without losing the crush washer. Looks like a result Start on Idle and 3 Bars dropping to 2 on a hot Idle and going to 3 when revved hot just a road test when its Mot'd to confirm its sorted .no evidence of it dropping all the way to zero when hot as it did before  )
Next job was the ABS light on ( not on start but when reaching about 7 mph ) ie when the computer checks the sensors and asks if we're all in agreement? obviously the answer is no, and on comes the light . I discounted the OVP as a suspect as the light doesnt come on until moving, so sensors were the first port of call so removed them and cleaned the front ones up, not that dirty ( especially compared to the ones on the 235k 220TE ), of which i was going to remove and substitute as they worked, but the ends ie the bit facing the reluctor ring was slightly different so binned that idea. However the wiring outer sheath was severely delaminating in a spiral fashion and had been taped over so this began to look suspect . Checked the resistance and found open circuit ( opening the connector was a hell of a game that alone took about 20 minutes of looking prying and inspecting and pulling :wallbash:) I then looked for a replacement , not confident which one on E-bay, so rang up merc Yes can be ordered from germany at £159 + VAT =£190:eek: Brexit and the exchange rate is costing me again
( how can brexit be worth it when the whole of the rest of the world thinks the pound is like the zimbabwe dollar ? ) so I decide to pass for just now thinking maybe FEbi or Meyle make them, but no luck there . I go Back to E-bay where a gentleman ordered 2 for his 129 "bought this and another one from breakers in Germany as I wanted to ensure I got one that worked OK - and they both did !!! .....hence I am offering this one for sale just to recoup the cost of what I bought it for " ) the part number matches what the Merc Dealer quoted me so for £29 inc P & P I go with that, so we await its arrival and installation to see if i can get the ABS light out and then an MOT Booked and then I can drive my 1994 Japanese imported 320 TE :D..... hopefully

****** hell Boyd, that’s going some! Good work that man!
Thanks Craig hows the CL ? I've Got to get on top of them I was slowly sinking with repairs building up I've still got a stuck bootlock again on the CLK and a small waterleak ( waiting for the U.V dye to come ) and the Old estate which really needs to be sold or broken needs a new seat belt fitted and a diagnosis on why its blowing no 5 fuse and making a humming noise from the N10 relay (replaced ) and losing most of the instrument cluster favourite now is a short in the multifunction stalk, and on top of all that my Daily Main Holiday vehicle the Vito Is in at mercland after breaking down on the M5, and so far its undiagnosed , so got to get them sorted or I'll sink.

Quick oil change on the CLK (used the drain plug rather than the Pela for a change ) . It was due at my 5000 mile change .
Used Shell 5w 40 this time , the stuff that came out was a 229.51 5w30 i use in the E class diesel . Thought it was worth a go for its greater cleaning power .
Fresh oil is good in any engine , but especially an M271 :D

As I was re torquing the wheels I finally removed the locking bolts and replaced them with the ones in the key box. It might have been my imagination, but it didn't seem to be fitting some of the bolts as well as it should and I've heard of lots of problems with them on here, so what the heck.
Stuck back the chrome strip that had come loose on the boot. I know, but I like a bit of chrome.

Best bit of cheap preventative maintenance you can do :)

Took the sliding top part off the central cubby on the 129 and gave it to MrsLK to take to work for their trimmers to retrim in nice soft leather. The original is in vinyl and has a hole in the side of it and is stupidly expensive to replace. This should look close to genuine and be more comfortable too. Pics tomorrow when I get it back....

As long as it doesn't smell damp like a Land Rover!
That’s a warm comforting friendly smell in a Land Rover, not such a great smell in an R230...:D:p
