So far I have decided that I need to get the w221 model. Working on the basis of getting 2006 plate. I have considered getting the 350 petrol version instead of the diesel one, looking at the mpg of both engines, on a run of 1000 miles petrol would require £30 extra in fuel, if that's the case, on an average run, then I can live with that. Hopefully, 350L hasn't got the issues that diesel engine has. Perhaps Alex can advise me here.

The only big issue we see with the 272 engine (V6 petrol in 2006 car) is the timing gear wear, I have an ML350 coming in tomorrow for that job, and it is a biggie!

How much does that cost?

Warranty Direct

Just had a quote from Warranty Direct for an S class, came in at 650 pounds. Have never dealt with them. Is that something worth considering?

Most of the diesels are ok. Not perfect engine but doable with a decent indie.

This being my first high maintenance vehicle on top of uncertainties linked to starting a new venture whatever vehicle I decide to go with I think I really need to look into a good warranty, as long as the cover is appropriate for the usage of that vehicle. It seems to me that whatever the engine w221 has issues, expensive ones.

I think that if you spend too much time reading on here , then you'll talk yourself out of buying any Mercedes :D

I've had diesel MBs for about 30 years now, and never had any problem.
They are good cars.
The customers will appreciate them.
Yes, you must plan for yearly maintenance costs.
If you still can't decide between petrol/diesel, then just have a look at Mecedes taxis, and see how many there are of each: there must be a good reason why 95% are diesel, all over the world. ;)

I think it's reasonable to conclude that a diesel lwb w220 is a good choice considering my situation with a warranty.

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Or get a S500 and LPG convert it - have run 2 Mercs on LPG - NEVER had a single problem with either related to fuel or engine (electrics can be more of an issue).

Diesels I have had 1 and already had some problems - reading on here they seem a lot more troublesome.

Due to high estimated mileage, I am leaning towards original configuration, but with an extended warranty.
