I have a 2005 ML270CDI, I have noticed that the car was going into Limp Home Mode on an intermittant basis.

I took it to a MB Specialist and there was no error messages on the car, they said from their experience its likely to be the Air Flow Meter (or something like that, sorry I am no mechanic).

If I switch the car off and then on again it clears for a while

The problem still happens although was less frequent for a while, I have noticed that the problem seems to happen when I am on Motorways, so I did some different testing and it seems to be if I stay around 2500 RPM the problem doesn't happen but if I drive at 3000 RPM or over it seems to happen.

I then decided to drive round town to prove my theory I dropped the Auto in two 1,2,3 and 4 to try and keep it over 3000 RPM but the problem didn't happen and only seems to happen in Drive.

It is back into the MB Specialist on Thursday but thought I would see if anybody has had a similar issue........

Any Ideas appreciated .... Hopefully not too expensive ones.....;)

Cheers

As stated most probably the MAF..air flow meter..most common problem for causing limp mode on all makes of cars.. Driving at 2.500rpm will not show any adverse effects as the engine will only rev to 3000rpm when in limp mode,
A new MAF..from the MB dealer is only around £60, well worth fitting

Other common fault is the inport shut off motor and/or linkage on manifold, done a few of them now, but as Xtractorfan said, common for the airmass, Saying that, on the 163 it comes up on star pretty much everytime!!

You can unplug the MAF and try the car, they often go well without when they are faulty

I have already swapped the MAF took it back to the Mercedes Specialist that swapped the MAF. They now think its a blockage somewhere, as I said I am not a mechanic but they said they need to take off the exhaust and clean or replace the particle filter. My issue is that it just seems guess work rather trying to troubleshoot and at my expense.

Anyone seen the paticle filters get clogged as I am told they are 2-300 pounds to buy and about 3 hours labour.

Thanks for your help so far

Cheers

Limp Home or stuck in drive?

Hi,

I've had the same problem. It seems to occur when accelerating and the auto doesn't shift up. However I can rev to 4000rpm. I've no idea yet but let me know what MB say.

All the above makes me think it could be a stuck EGR valve.

check for little cracks in the rubber connectors of the small vacuum lines. One of the small Y connectors had a slight split and this caused an the same symptoms!

My ml270 kept. Going. In to limp mode no warning lights, I'd have to stop switch off then restart to clear limp Mode I found it was due. to low level of fluid caused by leak at the connector. plug seals failed. I fitted a new connector plug which comes with. Seals on it , all sorted. now. it wasn't. the air maff. sensor. Or the conductor plate in the transmission that houses the solenoids. Which can be a cause . so I just Replaced the pan filter. New sump gasket. 3.5 ltrs of new fluid drives a treat now. Done. 233000 miles. Just about run in lol, still going strong love my ml270 1999/ 2000 regards digger dave 2011

Can you hear the turbo spinning up? The turbo charger makes these cars they are pretty are horrible to drive if it stops working, check the vacuum lines, or could be a split turbo hose neither of these will trigger the EML but will feel like limp mode.
