OM606
Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can help here, I'm at a bit of a dead end!

I've got a OM606.962 that I fitted last winter into my defender canpervan. It's got a diesel pump uk 7.7mm pump and a few other goodies. In May we did 2000 miles around Scotland and it didn't miss a beat!
Until the way home, the engine temp always sat at 80c or below. 1 hour from home (after a 12 hour drive) the temp then shot to 120c and it was clear the head gasket failed. I tried to remove the thermostat and carry on but it wasn't having it, it was pressurising the coolant too much!

I removed the head and had it pressure tested, skimmed, new valve seats and stem seals. I also had the injectors swrviced whilst they were out.
I installed it with a new headgasket and followed the manual carefully. The gasket was correct and it all went together very well.

Started it up once back together and it's running good, spot on apart from the temperature. It's getting hot (max 100c) but quite quickly and stationary.
I've manually bled the water system to the highest point (heater matrix). Filled the radiator and hose to the head.
There is no water circulation, the water is not flowing.
I've recently replaced the thermostat for a new Febi Bilstein 82c.
Today I replaced the water pump even though it was replaced before the trip for a metal pump.

I still have the same issue. I'm confident it's no longer the headgasket as there are no symptoms. The water is not being pressurised, there is no steam, no exhaust gas etc.
The water in the header tank is cold even when the engine is 80c - 90c.

The fan is working when manually switched.
The radiator is a TD5 alisport one.
I also have the cooling mod pipe to cylinder 5 and 6.

It appears as if the thermostat is not opening, or there is a bad air lock. But I'm at a bit of a loss where to go next.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

TIA
Lewis

Do you have proper flow through the radiator? You can feel the whole thing for flow, or use a thermal camera.
If you feel there may be a big air lock, perform a vacuum fill of the system. This is the usual process we do on most engine, unless they are sensitive to pulling seals out this way.
Are the heater matrix pipes hot at all?

Hello Lewis,
I got an om606 on my defender and i got exactly the same problem.
With an electric fan, we I turn over 3000 rpm or on hills the temp can increase until 115-120 degrees.
I changed the termostat 78 degrees, the fan turn at 85 i got the pipe to the 6th cylinder and my handmade copper radiator is bigest than Td5.

Did you find the solution to your problem plz ?

The cooling mod to cylinder 5 & 6 could it be possible it’s connected wrongly ie flow through mod
is fighting the flow of water pump slowing coolant flow through engine ?
