Hello good people - hope you are having a great bank holiday weekend!

Having given my 2014 R231 SL a good bath earlier, I have noticed that the two rear windscreen trims are fading (see pics). They are gloss black originally.

Has anyone come across this / know a good solution? I'm thinking either replace (although not sure how easy they are to fit / part number to get the price), respray or even wrap?!

Any shared thoughts or experiences are much appreciated :)

Don’t know part number off hand, I think they just slide downwards with a hidden “button” half way down that sits in a detention hole.

Have a similar problem with my 2008 SLK, just booked it in with local superb body shop for respray - £180+VAT plus they need the car overnight, presumably so both the paint and the lacquer can dry properly. Watched a Youtube video about changing them and suspect going that route would be rather more expensive!

Hi,I had the same problem and had them replaced. The part numbers are Left side (Passenger side) A2317950155 and right side ( driver side) A23179502 55,they cost about £35 each .
I had them done at an Independent Merc specialist ,about 1 hour to do.There is a video on Youtube if you want to try yourself, but its a bit fiddly.
Initially I thought about a wrap but was advised against it.

Me, I would leave them alone and try a polish to bring them up to some standard.

It looks like the glue has separated under the top, I doubt polishing them will work

I had my done recently surprisingly inexpensive which I didn’t expect otherwise I would have done them sooner... around £20 +VAT and labour... ii has other things done at the time so don’t have the actual breakdown.... they just come off and new ones ‘glued’ on...

TIA.

Interested in this.. I noted that mine are a little worn looking too.

Again, I thought expensive.. in fact, for some reason I though it would be all part of the rear screen, lol.

Two things. They are currently unavailable from Mercedes and last time I heard they were around £90 each.

Hi NJSS, perhaps it was the quote to me as I know the kind manager does discount items for me as I’m in there a lot! I’m away at the moment and will look for the paperwork when back in a few days... I know this was part of a few other jobs and I usually negotiate for the whole job and not individual items, but he did break it down... this was before covid, Feb 2019, so I expect prices may change but I wouldn’t have thought by that much.... but will try and find the part numbers...

Just for info , these trims are very thin (3mm ish) plastic in black with a thin covering of some sort of clearcoat, They seem to deteriorate first at the edge nearest the screen. Fairly easy to replace. They aren't glued in, but have a system of locking tabs which you unlock by sliding them downwards, but first you need to use a trim tool to pry out the button from it's seat as described by Star above. Far cheaper to replace than try to get painted clear coated or wrapped. The problem seems to be lack of supply though. Mine were £40 each a couple of years ago.

Oh interesting. If its just plastic I might just paint mine.

I'm sure as long as I use 2K clear then they should last a while.

Personally speaking, painting looks ok but it’s not as nice as the black mirror finish you get on new ones. Looks cheap.

Really? But if its factory painted with 2k clear and I do the same + polish I would expect it to look the same. I suppose there is little to be lost from testing it out.

It's not just the clearcoat that deteriorates though Conor, it's the surface of the thin plastic. Have a go though - nothing really to lose!
