I have in front of me a Huge dilemma. Photos are attached so as you can see my dilemma. I was just putting into place a newer hydraulic pump when I happened to notice the caked up oil, carbon and gunge that I could now see more clearly in the inlet manifold.
So, I decided to pull out the manifold, clean out as much gunk as I possibly could and re install it. I've now done that and it is 80-90% better than it was and thoroughly dried out. I remember thinking that I should probably clean off the worst of what I could see into the engine while the manifold was out. Part of me now realise's why some don't go as far as I have. And then I think about how long I've worked on this, how much I've spent, and everything this has affected behind the scenes. I have learnt a heck of a lot. And to be honest it has now got me interested in possibly doing more work on mercedes cars locally or refurbishing some of the electrical parts and reselling them on.
Anyway. I would welcome all your comments now. And, once she passes the next Mot she will then be replaced before her Mot following this one with another Mercedes-Benz. I.E. either another newer version of the same or the E220 equivalent.
Sorry, I have posted before and after photos.

    Don't replace it with a OM651, replace with a OM654 or keep the OM646.

Oven cleaner works pretty well on that. Its similar to what I did on my ML270 when I deleted the flaps. Your flaps appear to have already been deleted? Anyway I had to do 3 rounds of oven cleaner and rinse to get it like new inside there, you will probably need twice that.

The OM654 has the same simplex chain as the OM651. I am sure it is a good engine but in that area it is the same as the 651.

Let’s hope MB have learnt a lesson as BMW did with simplex timing chains, doesn’t take a lot to manufacture better quality parts to negate the issue the oils nowadays are certainly up to the job.
if I were buying any a car with a simplex chain I’d certainly be looking for frequent oil changes in line with or better than scheduled maintenance

The BMW simplex camchain is much longer than the Merc's. The BMW N47 oil capacity is 5.2 litres compared to the Merc OM651 which is 6.5 litres.

I completely agree on changing the oil more frequently than the scheduled maintenance.

Well yes. I have been googling local gear all afternoon. Is this a fairy new discovery though as it only seems to be available in America currently and not here?

Tell me about it!!!! Just glad my anti-depressants are keeping me just above sinking point. Plus the trouble is I have no way of testing her currently for emissions levels. And after watching an Mot on a diesel van, they do rev them up and i am not sure mine would pass that stage.
