Updated My NTG4 Satnav.

Acquired a set of (genuine MB) 2012 V10.0 update discs for the NTG4 Comand in my 2008 S204 C220 and have just installed the update.

From the Engineering menu I'd discovered that the installed maps were 07Q2, so system had never been updated from new. Expected to have to go back to the engineering menu to update, but..

Ejected all 6 cds from the changer, loaded the first of the 2 DVD's, system automatically detected the update disc and asked "Do you want to update? Yes or No" - autorun!! The Yes button was highlighted, so I just pushed down on the central control knob and the update started automatically. I did not have to go into the engineering menu at all.

Almost 2 hours later it asked for DVD2 - loaded that and the update continued, finishing after about 2 1/4 hours all told, "Update installed successfully, activating NAV" and the nav screen came up. Result.

I'd read elsewhere that you have to have the ignition on to keep Comand alive throughout the update, so for the first 1 1/2 hours I had the engine running, then I connected my battery charger and turned the engine off (leaving the ignition on) and turned the climate control off. Should have done this from the start, I'd have saved 3-4 litres of diesel.

I also found some good information about updating in the comand manual that came with the car - things like you can interrupt and restart the update - but once you start the update, Nav is not available until it has completed - so don't interrupt the update unless it's essential.

So - anyone interested in a set of NTG4 discs for pre-facelift W/S204 (MB part number A204 827 92 59)? PM me.

How good is your Italian Malcolm? These look a bargain, any others on eBay are £100+!

Have you overlooked http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=106714&page=2 post 20?

As for knowing Italian to update, I'd be unsure about whether it would automatically install with Italian directions and be awkward to get back to English. The update itself - the only instructions were "do you want to upgrade, yes or no" and "please insert DVD2", so I'd not expect that to cause problems.

Other than that, it was just time - 2 1/4 hours for mine! I stayed with or very close to the car throughout just in case, but there were no glitches, and it did not ask for DVD2 until about 1 3/4 hours in!

So did my S204 - recently on the A2 between the M25 and Bluewater she thought we were in the middle of a field between the old main road and the railway! Also when we are around Aylesbury visiting dear daughter, there are a number of new roundabouts she knew nothing about - OK on the outskirts of town but problematic in the centre of town and loads of traffic. Bet there's been a few drivers muttering "what's that pratt in the red Merc up to??!"

On a different tack, it's annoying that MB Ashford did not sort out the Comand before selling the car to me - they had supplied it new, serviced it then taken it in PX against another brand new car, it was then an MB Approved second hand car - and not only was the satnav 3-4 years out of date, they also had not cleared his address book and historical destinations, so I had a load of names, phone numbers and addresses from his ownership!! Took me about an hour to delete them all.

Yes we have heard now so many times that nothing gets done to the cars at all, sad really when you think of what they cost, though my CL did not come from a MB dealer it too was full of phone numbers and all the addresses in the Comand.
