Hi Folks,

I have a slight leak from my water pump on my ‘05 W211 E270, so I’m looking to replace it over the next few weeks.

Seems like a fairly straightforward job, albeit I need to buy a T50 bit to take the idler pulley off. I also don’t have any “E” sockets, although regular hex sockets seem to work just fine, so far as I can see.

However, my question is how much coolant am I likely to need in order to refill the system? And will I need to do anything special to bleed any air locks?

Thanks!

Nik

To help me i used a camera to take pictures as i went along .,,,,And label all the parts so you can replace them in the right order .And a torque wrench this tool is important every bolt, and nut, needs to go back torqued up to pec. Check the pulleys for noise and wear replace those that are faulty . I would replace hoses and thermostat at the same time .. As for the coolant mix i would think that 1 ltr should do it .

If you have never changed the cooland then now is the time to do it, MB say 15 years and with the stat off its perfect to flush the entire system and fill with with new. Look in the manual for the capacity or ask any repetible auto factors.

And WHS above.

Thank you - looks slightly different, but it’s a good guide. I’m terrible for never having used a torque wrench, despite having done all manner of big mechanical jobs over the years. I tend to just work on feel, which I know many mechanics will scoff at.

water pump was actually replaced about six years ago (approx 100,000 miles ago), and the coolant was done then - amazingly it still looks absolutely brand new!

I have a few varying sizes of torque wrenches that I've 'acquired' over the years but they rarely get used .... and I suspect the same for a good many 'mechanics'

Thought this might be useful when you refit the serpentine belt 0C459319-C4A8-4A09-BA22-A8066DBBDC74.jpeg

That belt certainly goes around the houses .... it'd be very easy to forget how it went on.

I lost count of the times I tried to fit the 'fan belt' to my Senator by memory ... I almost always had to RTFM :)

Am I right in thinking I don’t need any sealant on the gasket or mating surfaces?

The 211 had the OM647 so ever so slightly different in its route if I remember correctly (was about 8 years ago when I needed to do mine on the 211.
Best thing we did when changing it was get my phone camera in there and take as many pics as I could, then managed to somehow piece it all together so I knew how it should look. That said if you have something like wiz then it’s so much easier lol

I do, especially on something like a water pump which is quite a lot of work to get at.

Just to close this one off, the new pump was fitted this evening. No real issues, aside from the two rubber hoses being a bit fiddly to remove from the old pump. Took me three hours total - I’m sure an expert could easily halve that.

Regarding coolant, I end up putting in maybe six or seven litres to fill it back up again.

So my new pump that was fitted just over two months ago is leaking. Cautionary tale: don't buy cheap from GSF. Their returns policy is that you send the part back to them, they then send it off to testing, which could take 4-6 weeks, and if it's deemed to be faulty they will issue a refund.

So three hours of my time wasted, not to mention extra expense of coolant and sealant. I did the job myself because I was on 80% furlough pay and needed to save some cash, but it was sadly a false economy in this instance. Avoid cheap water pumps, and avoid GSF! Now off to google "genuine Mercedes water pump"....
