So my project is this as the 420cdi w211 isn't available where i live, i want to make my own, that's by getting a 220cdi and throw the engine away, and put the 420cdi in it, question is what about the OM629 reliability on the daily, i'm planning to do a tune, dpf and egr delete, most likely upgrade cooling and if i have some.left over money from the old engine, i might consider hybrid turbos, will this affect reliability? When i get the engine what should i replace beside the usual (chains and oil, filters and probably valve cover gasket etc ..) this is taking into consideration that the engine has abt 200k+ Km (more than 120k miles) appreciate any insight and help from current or previous owners of 420cdis and their experiences

I read a while ago you couldn’t get a new glow plug relay module for that engine …not sure if supply has changed but I would look at parts availability issues before embarking on your “project”.

Ik abt that but it's interchangeable between n57s engines from bmw (6 cylinder diesels) and mercedes S class 420 cdi (om629), but is the swap feasable ?

No idea about feasibility , but it all sounds shockingly expensive ?
Unless cost doesn’t matter and it’s just something you want to do .

Well afaik, it's drop the old engine and in with the new obviously transmission included with the swap and i also would like to know its reliability... Like oil pump, bearings, turbos ..?

OM629 isn’t a great engine, not seen many on here but there are threads with some pretty bad issues :(

Yearly tax is too high for it, abt 2k usd a year ... For a DIESEL and i can't import it anyway cause morocco only allows vehicles that are 5 years older than the current year

surely if you get a 220 and put in a 420 you need to inform the authorities and get lumbered with the tax. Now assuming you are trying hide that I shall not offer any "wisdom"

We don't have that kind of stuff like you guys have in the UK/US/EU (i guess) where you can do whatever you want in your cars and just notify some service and voila your papers are ready we can't even rebuild salvage cars hence why i want to do this but if you don't wanna share some advice about reliability and so on no one made you

Cylinder liners are drifting, oil leaks between transmission and engine block, exhaust manifold cracking. Not very often though.

So it's not a design fault like on all engines? Just some cases then okay, but would the swap be possible??

cylinder liner is a design fault, I can't remember did they fix it at some point. But like said it is not happening on every unit or even very often.

Interesting, and do you thing the swap is feasable as in take a 220cdi with its gearbox and sell it and bringing in the 420cdi up in it ?

I think you should swap propulsion too, parts are probably different in car with V8 than I4. EPC will tell for sure. Brakes are bigger etc.

everything is possible. feasible comes down to the cost (your wallet) and doing it right.
If you can go for it. keep the thread updated - will be interesting to follow.
