I had all the windows tinted on my Seat Alhambra. Proper job, all windows removed.

A massive job! But the car went back together as new (it was only a month old anyway!) and was squeak and rattle free for the next 180k miles.

I'm sure a Mercedes would be no different, I had the door cards removed a couple of times on the S203. Plus the dash and centre console. Never a rattle, all went back as intended.

So, it can be done and done without detriment. It's the psychological element that's the most difficult to overcome. People just don't want their cars "ripped apart"!

The headaches come when thing do not go well and it will never be as good as it was, all of the clips involved will have lost their initial bite, a Mercedes door is a little more complex than any Seat, unless you have taken a door right down, all the work and settings cannot be appreciated.
There is still the rear window to deal with.

I really do not think that you understand what has to be done to replace the windows, everything in the door has to come out, all the factory settings lost.
All C pillar trim has to come out to do the rear window, it is a massive job and if you have never tried to do this or fully understand you should not say its easy, it is far more than the little plastic clips that hold the door cards on, the car would never be the same again.

We shall agree to disagree.

I would not let a dealer replace a dash on a new car, but would let them swap the windows. I know it is not ideal, and I never said it was an easy job, but I would not expect the car to rattle or anything afterwards.

They won't do it anyway, as the tinted glass is so expensive, it may only cost £300 as an option, but factory tinted rear window for my old mans GT was £860, if doing all of them it will be easier for them to sell the car and order new I would guess.

So I would suggest that fitting OEM glass would be an option, and maybe put a caveat in that if there is any rattles afterwards the car will be rejected (and get that agreement in writing).

Which is why all the clips were replaced. There is nothing special about a Mercedes door, apart from the fact it is probably far better engineered to be stripped and reassembled. As is most of the car!
The rear window is no great problem either. Autoglass replace them nearly every day!

But if one cannot face subjecting one's car to this "trauma" then don't do it!

So easy to say when you have never done the job

This is getting heated, really up to you what to do but there has to be some "give" from the dealer for the time wasted and the inconvienience to yourself.

3 options IMO:

  1. Reject it and get a car to the correct spec then get a 10% discount for the inconvienience also telling the dealer to shove the £300.
  2. Get the Windows tinted and get a 10% discount for the inconvienience also telling the dealer to shove the £300.
  3. Buy an Audi and tell the dealer to shove it all.

I have had Johnsons film put on my windows (20% as OEM) it is perfect and IMO better safety wise as the windows will never smash and enter the car (a god thing if you have kids in the back), a good tinter will do it so you will never be able to tell.

If such a job was approached in a measured & methodical manner, without time pressure, with access to all types of replacement fixings in case of breakage, by a skilled technician with experience of such work, who would not be happy until his work was identical to factory standards, then I would reluctantly agree to have the work carried out.

NONE of these things will happen at a main dealer though.

If the main dealer allowed a specialist to carry out the work, and paid in full for all the aforementioned qualities, I'd be a little less likely to reject the car.

Everyone knows mistakes happen - everyday in every walk of life. What it comes down to is do you think that when you decide to part with over £40000, that you should expect the company or its agent to be able to give you what you ask for....Or is it Ok to get close to what you want...or just give you anything....

I want to set up a dealership - ST4 - can you and you friends buy a few vehicles from me?? I'll try and get as close to what you want as I can:D but cant promise anything ^^

Just thinking back on this when a van reversed into the side of my V70R I elected to have the body shop fit the new doors, and I fitted all the locks and windows my self, I am that fussy

Verdict!!

So what do you think the garage offered to do??

I'll get a few responses and let you know later today!

Clue!.. I'm shocked, and I am still without the original car.

So what do you think the garage offered to do??

They have offered full new price on your trade in, 50% discount on the incorrect car, 2 years free fuel, a full valet every week and free servicing for the length of time you own the car.

Fake Letter to DVLA requested

I have just received an email from the dealership, they want to deregister the car, and give me my deposit back, shake my hand and say sorry, however they need to deregister the car, in order to do so, I have been given a letter drafted by them, in which it says that I want to deregister the vehicle, as I am having financial difficulties!!!!, and not that they have f...ed the order up. As this is the only reason dvla will allow it!!, so rather than solve my problem, they are asking me to lye to the dvla so that they can save their own a.s, and give me nothing for my 8-9 weeks of waiting and disappointment.

What do you reackon to that??

At the end of the day DVLA is only a computer, so does it matter
