I've been reading and enjoying this excellent forum for quite a while, so I figure it's time I made a contribution...

My late father always wanted a W113 Pagoda (silver, red seats) but never quite managed it, nor did his father realise his own dream of an SL190 (silver, red seats). So, I find myself in a somewhat emotionally charged state as I await delivery of my first Mercedes Benz roadster, an SLK 230 R170 (silver, black seats)...

I'm getting excitement, anticipation, a sense of responsibility & respect to my forbears' impeccable taste in cars, and a certainty that they'd both be good with the idea of a (black-seated!) SLK rather than an SL...

The SLK will be our third Merc: Two A-Classes (a W168 and a W169) precede it, with our third A-Class being delivered on the same day as the SLK. We love the 168/169 A-Classes to bits, so couldn't resist the chance to buy one of the last ones made with super low mileage and just the right spec. Boy, was that an expensive day out or what?!?

In my humble opinion, the A-Class is among MB's greatest and most ingenious cars and one of the defining cars of the last quarter century. Just like the SLK, in fact...

Cue debate!

Welcome to the forums.....

I'd have to agree, Mercedes don't design high tech equipment specifically for the A class do they?
As far as I'm aware, it uses tech filtered down from the high end models.
Like my C class, it has stuff that was designed for the S model years before the C class got it.
It will never catch up because as stuff is passed down, new stuff is brought out for the high end models.

P.S. I drove a new A class recently and it was a great car with lots of goodies (fully loaded, as idiots call it), very impressed so don't take it that I'm dissing the A class. I'd definitely be happy owning one.

Your forebears certainly had impeccable tastes even more so through the rosy lens of nostalgia.

Unfortunately your time line has saddled you with the 'choice' of computer driven euro tat that has the same badge:-(

Fair points - they did after all have to tack on the S Class ESP system to stop it falling over. I recall reading at the time that you got ESP as standard on the top and bottom of the MB range, but not much in between.

I guess I was thinking more about the radical design - bonnet & windscreen rake almost the same, tiny overhangs, sandwich floor, CVT auto, tardis-like interior space - five adults in comfort in a car shorter than a Ford Ka. Like no Merc before it nor since, it brought a whole new community of ownership.
