Hi all,

I've noticed that sometimes the radiator fan on my car stays on after a drive. Now, I know this is normal; however, the fan is still coming on even when it is freezing and driven exceptionally gently.

The fan doesn't stay on all the time after a drive; however, I noticed it this morning in torrential rain and cold temperatures. I drove the car very gently with it being in glide mode most of the time! So why the fan would be on is puzzling me. Never had it in any of my motors before.

No coolant warning lights and the sensor in the car says that it is in the middle every time, i.e. OK.

Another one to add (which may be completely disconnected) is that my auto start/stop 98% never works. It probably came on twice in the past 4000 miles I've driven the car? Sometimes I wish you could download a log file to see what condition wasn't right for the Auto Start/Stop not to kick in (Software geek kicking in here)

This extra little bit might be me going a little mad, or it may have something to do with this. I feel like sometimes, the auto interior heating is a bit everywhere? i.e. one day 20C is nice and toasty, and the next day it's cold, and I have to ramp the heat up to 22C. I'm comparing this to my old car which I never changed the thermostat temperature - it pretty much always stayed at 20 all of its life.

The car had a B service by an Indie Mercedes specialist four weeks ago. Also, the vehicle is going into Mercedes on Tuesday for all range of problems. Mainly:
  1. Juddering front brakes (Original post and other ongoing judder forum)
  2. Replace Nearside front and rear bearings (pothole)
  3. Replace alloy (cracked alloy by a pothole, see the forum here)
  4. LI72.00-P-067456 DEC17 – 213 up to production 1/13/17 door trim strips protrude at front/rear, affix adhesive fabric tape.
  5. LI91.10-P-067712 FEB18 – 213 up to 1/9/18 (VIN A409095), 205 up to 12/19/17 (1F394735), 257 up to 1/8/18 (A000497) left side of seat creaking noise when cornering. A burr at the bottom of the backrest member may cause contact with the lower cross member. This produces a sound when the two components move.

For any W213 owners out there - this is a thread of many Technical Service bulletins raised since the car was released.

In front of the radiator are louvres that open and close to speed up the engine getting to temperature. Just wondering if they’re not opening so the engine is warmer than it thinks it should be so keeping the fan running.

Do you think a warning light would come on though?

The fan will also come on to cool the air con condenser. Next time it does it turn off the A/C to see if it stops.

Good idea. I will give this a go.

There is no active grill shutter installed either on this model so air is deffo getting to the radiator!

Pretty sure my W213 (220) had an active shutter (might have dreamt it though as it’s awhile since I had it)

Yeah some of them do - checked the Mercedes EPC after entering my VIN and it does grey out the active grill shutter on the part diagram. So I don’t know why or why not it may have been fitted.

Used to get this with my Audi A6 avant 2.0 diesel, seems the DPF glow could be seen from outer space too- Audi said perfectly normal even if the fan ran on for another 30 minutes - which it frequently did even in winter

Will double check next time it happens when I turn it off. Will turn ign back on and see if it is still running.

Ahh, thanks for the comment, John. Probably is normal - I'll speak to Mercedes on Tuesday and see what they've got to say

Similiar experience on the a6 2l diesel.. on the audi forums it was mentioned its to do with the dpf regen.. apparently Audis had to be driven above 1500rpm for half an hour for this to take place.. but the car would hardly ever touch that in my experience, it used to tick along at 1300-ish rpm with the car doing around 75mph... ... It would do even after a 80 mile journey and i noticed it used to happen in cylces.... for months car would be fine after switching off and there would be a period of few weeks when the fan would run after every run no matter how short/long
