2014 E250 CGI
I am looking at a beautiful example of a 2014 E250 CGI with 72k miles on it all the optional extras I could ever want and a beautiful spec as well.

I am coming from a 2.0TDI Passat and fell in love with the E-Class once I drove a 2010 E350 CDI but decided to go for a petrol instead. My question is how is the reliability on the facelift 250CGI engines? Are there any big issues to keep me from buying the car? Also, what are the main points to watch out for when inspecting the car.... I will take it to get professionally inspected but I want to also test drive it and look around it before sending it to the shop to get inspected. The economy is not my biggest concern so a 3.5 V6 petrol car also isn't out of the question as long as it is within budget.

Oh and one last point, do the natural leather seats start tearing like the MB tex ones?

Thanks in advance for all the insight and tips!

Hello and welcome,

Real leather seats last very well (compared to the Artico they fit in AMG line cars (as an aside original MB Tex was also very hard wearing))
I'd go for a V6 M272 (as long as it's after the balance shaft issues) but then again I'm slightly biased...;)

Welcome...
You are making a good choice with the 212...just not sure on the 250CGI personally - it's the 2l IL4 M274 engine in the facelift model at least (the previous was the M271 1.8L with timing chain/sprocket potential issues), but 208bhp is a bit wanting... probably just me though.
Mercedes M274/M270 1.6/2.0L Engine specs, problems, reliability, oil, A/B/C/GLA-Class (motorreviewer.com)
I don't know too much about the 274, so google brought this up for your reading pleasure.
As BC says above the V6 M272 (3.0L or 3.5) is a good call, as you say if it's not fuel efficiency led.
Red leather is excellent on MB cars (I'm also a little biased) - what colour is the car exterior?

Welcome. You will find changing from a diesel to a petrol car very different and the 250 petrol will be nothing like the 350 diesel you drove which is a superb engine. I went from a 231bhp diesel to a 367bhp petrol and I did miss the diesel torque initially although I wouldn't change back now! :)

The other problem will be finding a V6 petrol as very few were being bought at that time.

It's got white exterior, sport trim, 19inch wheels, panoramic roof, with chestnut brown interior in perforated leather.
In general the petrol V6 is very hard to find and too expensive if found. My current Passat 2.0TDI has 150hp so for me, the 250CGI seems like a good upgrade at the moment.

I also found an E200 petrol with 180 something bhp but its a lower spec and a bit weaker engine so I guess I'm sticking to the 250.

Thanks for the tips!

19" wheels ill be nice enough to look at from the outside but uncomfortable and prone to cracking on the roads we "enjoy" here in the UK...

I'm a very careful and calm (slow;)) driver and decided to take the trade-off a while ago since I already have 19inch alloys on my 2016 Passat:)

You are absolutely telling the truth, however. There is a very noticeable decrease in comfort compared to smaller sizes.

How do the torque figures compare?

"Fashion" what a strange thing...
I'm of the opinion that I can't see them from the drivers seat, but I can feel the difference and so can my wallet...

Looks like 340nm from the VW diesel , the 274 range looks 270-370nm depending variant so it shouldn't feel too different in this case...just the diesel will provide it from lower down the rev range....

The VW has 340 N.m while the E250 has 350 N.m. The Passat Is very punchy at low RPM but it's a huge disappointment at anything higher than 3000 RPM.

I am in my 20s so I guess that's where we part ways on this matter. You are speaking the truth, which I am still not ready to take lol.
The bigger wheels will look good on the car when I set it as my phone's background :D

I think the optimum UK wheels all round are 18", but personally (touch wood) I've had 20" on my last 3 cars and no issues/problems/ride quality concerns. If you drive as you mention you will be fine. Also seems that 250 will suit you fine too, nice colour combo. Post a link to the ad if you want us to run the rule over it.....

Good for you - Blobcat can’t even remember his 20s :geek:

Then the 250 will be the other way round. Not only much low rev punch but much more fun once the revs get going ;)

It should be on the build sheet / vin decoder. If you have AMG Line or any such nonsense in your build and black seats with a suede looking bit down the middle you have plastic “tear along the dotted line” seats...
