All,

I am trying to replace the high level tailgate brake light on my Mercedes Vito (2017 - W447) but cannot find any inf. on-line re. removal of housing assy. I think it may pop out if I gently prise it away from body but don’t wish to damage it should it be held secure by a bolt. Has anyone done this or afford me advice - the new one I’m putting in has an inbuilt video camera so I can check back if van when going into revers in my audio 15 head unit.

Steve. Did you sort it out. It's dead easy and you don't need instructions. Get up there find the screws get the right screwdriver head and unscrew three screws. This gets the red bit off. Then screws to remove black base are revealed. Take this off if you want. If you get right camera it fits on top of black base. There is a slot in camera mount goes over central screw hole for red lens. That will hold but for secure fit but use the two small holes in camera mount with self tapping screws into base. Fit red lens back on. Feed cable through door seal. That's easy bit. It's finding clear instructions how to wire to monitor difficult bit. Can connect to reversing lights as a supply and switch if you want or just yellow to monitor and power that from a live source behind dash or battery. Camera will work just won't come on automatic with reverse gear. Watch out connecting to rear lights as it messes up Cambus system as I found out.

Hello,

Many thanks for your message & yes I was simply able to prise high level led light off using thin plastic tool. It was a tad tight but I eventually worked it around edge and it came off so just had the connectors to unclip.

Unfortunately, the new light which had the camera built in did not let me fit original power connector leads. From initial observation the connector looked like it should fit but the plug would not go in. When I used my phone to take photos and zoomed in I could see the connector ‘holes’ differed so I sent it back for refund.

Rather than chance getting another dud I popped original light back in and ordered a replacement tailgate ‘handle release’ which had camera built in….that fitted so easily and cabling to audio 15 replacement harness was simple so I can now engage reverse and see behind me via original audio head unit.

Thanks again for your interest

Steve
