A/C Heater blower works only sometimes...

The heater blower of my W124 E280 T works at times. Sometimes it doesn't work at all, but then when I turn off the ignition switch and back on again it blows fine (mostly on max speed). I have the EC type of heating so there is only a slow and fast mode and a button for AUTOMATIC mode. When it blows it seems just fine in that mode and the temp adjustment always works. My guess is that the blower engine is worn out. Or could it be the fan speed regulator? Anybody got any similar experiences?

Thanks guys!

It just needs new carbon brushes fitting,, on Ebay circa £4 it is the in coming air that starts it up sometimes

Thanks for the quick reply...
I live in Berlin, but I can buy them on eBay I guess.
Do you have a link? Or a photo of what they look like?
When I type 'carbon brushes fitting' on eBay I get no hits...

I tried it there are some but not the right ones.

If you have shops where they repair small hand drills or vacuum cleaners etc,,they will keep some they can be filled or sand down with ease,,just take one of the old ones out and you have the size

Thanks Malcolm!

Do you know where I can find a description of how to remove/replace the blower engine? Normally i'd say somewhere behind/left of the glove compartment but my W124 has a passenger airbag there that I don't wanna mess with...

Today I drove my car. And the strange thing is that when the blower works, then it works fine. And it seems to always blow on a very minimum speed (even slower than the slowest speed in EC). Could it be anything else than the blower engine?

If it always works on the min speed,,then it is the reg pack that has failed that is 83 in the link,,also on Ebay cheap from time to time

The thing is it always blows but on a very very low speed. Lower than the low speed of the EC cause when I just turn the ignition it also works at the low speed and this one is faster (fast enough to hear it slowly blowing). The blower does sounds a bit tired and squeaky to be honest...

And 74 or 83; When I click on the 074 or 083 in the russian page it doesn't load any other page or illustration... it's called a regulator pack?

The link will open and that is all, I put it up so that you could see where the reg pack is

Thanks Malcolm.

I see it now. Think I will have to work on both the heater blower and reg. Because sometimes it works (mostly right after turning ignition on) and then also changing speeds on the EC functions fine. So if it's the reg then it's not totally defect.

My main question still remains: How do I get to the blower / reg from the interior? Which dashboard parts do I remove before being able to remove the blower? I have a passenger airbag and this is my first MB...

If it works a bit randomly and sometimes squeaks my money's on the motor bearings (i use the term loosely) being partially seized/on their last legs

On a W124 the blower motor is accessed from the engine bay. It lives in the scuttle under the windscreen wiper, there's a 'how to' >here<. Good time to service the wiper mechanism too if yours is one of the earlier(?) types without the snap fit plastic cover. There's how to's on this site somewhere

Yes please,
So I can remove it from the area of the window wipers.
I owned a bmw e30 touring before and this one I could just do it from the passenger side.

Does your paper cover the later cars Malcom? That link i posted shows earlier cars which have a slightly different arrangement for the trim/weather strip at the base of the windscreen- comes off in one piece with the wiper motor

Thanks for the mail. It shows how to remove the dust filter. Once I removed this, I have direct access to the blower? ;)

Aha okay, I just now saw the reply of Hotrodder; Thanks!

My car is was built in march 1994 so I figure it has the newer wiper mechanism, and it functions just fine...

I shall start with replacing the motor bearings and take it from there... keep you posted. First I gotta read the link though... ;)
